Government Shutdown - Camping Outlook

Should our Federal Government shut down, what will the effect be on persons camped on BLM land and in southern federally owned areas? I missed the last one by a few days and wondered what the result might be? I read in a book that parts of the Appalachian trail were closed where they ran through Federal areas?

We would ask a similar question for National Park campgrounds if anyone knows? We hope to head out to Kalaloch campground in Olympic NP?

Yo- Visitor Centers might be closed, however the parks should remain open-just search that! Probably won't stop the hand wringing and subtle(or not so) political diatribe.

At the beginning of the last political insanity, we were camped at Zion NP.
The campground host came around and told everyone to get out by the end of the day because they had been told that they must pack up and leave. The hosts told the park staff that if they were forced to leave, they would not be back. They were allowed to stay but the campers had to leave.

We”re familiar with the area so just moved to a BLM disbursed area.

The entry gate to Zion shut down and everyone got in for free.

Edit.
The NPS and BLM law enforcement staff continued to work.

National Parks close from my understanding, but shouldn’t affect BLM other than you might be able to stay longer than 14 days if no staff working.

As a NPS retiree I went through 4 shutdowns. There may be some LE rangers but not a full staff level. At my home park some rather nefarious people vandalized areas. Be careful if your plans require federal sites.
There’s a lot of behind the scenes support the NPS does that the public never sees. This will disappear for the duration. Be safe out there.

I heard they were cutting down oak trees and planting maple.

diatribe : noun a forceful and bitter verbal attack against someone or something: a diatribe against consumerism.

Let's all be careful about political posts. There are other places on the web for that kind of discussion.

As long as we stick with what will be open/closed during a possible Federal government shutdown, this thread will remain open and unedited.

We usually camp at non-government CGs, although, we do have a favorite state park. Otherwise, we sometimes camp at KOA.

When I was here in the Long Term Visitor Area at Quartzsite for the last shutdown, they kept the entrances open, but closed the offices, didn't dump the dumpsters, and shut down the dump station & water fill areas.

Each National Park will have its own shutdown policy. At Big Bend, during a recent shutdown the policy was - if the bathrooms and dumpsters remained a non-health hazard then the campgrounds could stay open. The hosts were told to do no work. Things did go smoothly so I won't say any more.

I've lost track. Any post on any subject can be considered political, if one chooses.

I got the definitive answer as to what will happen in Olympic NP with a government shutdown. I ran into the Park Superintendent at lunch today (these things happen in small towns) and asked her what would happen if I was camped at Kalaloch and things shut down on Friday. She said that everyone would be directed to leave, they would close and lock all the bathrooms and facilities, and lock the gate until the shutdown was over.
I think we'll head over for our usual December camp on the coast and see what develops.
