... so old that I remember when computer memory was little donuts of magnetic material (cores) with wires running through the middle in two directions, one bit per core at a cost of about $1 per bit.
Prices and sizes have dropped by about a "gigga". Best bargain ever...

Those core memory arrays are really neat looking. I'd like to have one just to display.
In the 1970s four megabytes of memory came on a card ten inches square and cost $8000. Nowadays I don't think you can buy that small amount of memory. In 1996 the total worldwide production of disk drive storage was sixteen terabytes. I think today you can buy two disk drives to total that. To me that's just amazing.

Teacher accused me of burping in class. It wasn't me, honest, but my punishment was to write, "I will not burp in class" 500 times.
I loaded up the typewriter with paper and sufficient carbons to fulfill the requirement, or so I thought.
I then had to write the five hundred lines again, by hand, no carbons.
Went to a one room school in Stockholm, Sask. for a few months. Grades one through seven. Took turns getting water from the pump at the neighbouring farm. Two holer outhouse with all the school's softball mitts and balls at the bottom to aim at. I think the crank phone was two long and a short. Or the crank was the guy listening in on the party line.

We used to look at the 8" x 8" 1k boards and wonder who they got to thread all the little cores. They were in the first computer I worked on.

Speaking of Vaccuum tubes, Lee DeForest was a pioneer on that invention. He was from Council Bluffs, Iowa. A school named for him was on West Graham Ave. Just down from our park shop in Fairmont Park. I never got too good on the slide rule. I was an aggie at Iowa State and we dealt with pruners and soil samplers. My Dad died ten days short of his 50th birthday. My 2 brothers and I were in our teens. We got our educations, did a number of jobs and are all retired now. I like recalling the old days, old ways and the times we had. Jim Norman, this has been quite a thread. Maybe we need to start a new group, Geezers and Geezerettes. Maybe not, the kids would think we all lie.

I'm old and my memory ain't what it used to be
I made a mmmmmmmistake. Lee deForest was a Council Bluffs native but the school named for him was not on West Graham. That school was Pusey elementary named for Nathan Pusey another native who was president of Harvard University for 18 years. Another school was named for Amelia Bloomer of ladies wear fame but I digress. If you ever find yourself needing to camp in the Omaha/ Council Bluffs area, I can recommend Arrowhead Park near Neola Iowa. There a quite a number of interesting historical sites in Council Bluffs, you could spend a week there one day.

Looks like a TV tube tester and the X-Ray machine where you could see the bones of your feet as you checked the fit of the shoes at the shoe store and at the same time got a nice dose of radiation in your midsection.
Hi: cpaharley2008... I'm just "S old". I brought a LP home from England as the cover was banned in NA. My parents gave it away cause I left it when I got married. I didn't have a record player. Alf

Just saw one 2 weeks ago in Grand Junction, Colorado. It was original from one of the local shoe stores, I used it frequently as a kid. Of course as a kid I did a lot of things I would not allow my kids to do when they were young, 35 to 40 years ago.

My uncle had the X-Ray machine in his collection building. I think he had one of my cousins disable it as he realized the radiation was not good. I believe it's probably still there. My cousins daughter now owns all the treasures. The display of the tube tester etc on this forum gets my competitive juices flowing. At a rally we could have a "what is this" contest with items that are reasonably identifiable " formerly massed produced", with a one bottle of beer entry fee. Winner ( unidentifiable by the others) takes all. Jim, I've hunted down around Douds but never hunted women. Which is why I'm still alive today.

Some of the old ways I definitely don't miss were medical and dental procedures. Remember cavity drilling without novocaine? I remember sitting in the chair, gripping the chair arms with all my might waiting for the dentist to hit the nerve if he had to go deep enough. Kind of like a sweepstakes you really didn't want to win. And the line of similar aged kids at the Dr's office getting our "shots", with those "resharpened" needles? Now I go in for a flu shot and with my usual babbling with the nurse, I often don't even know that it's already done.
But also long gone are the Dr's who made home visits.

I keep getting reminded of how old I am with all of the ads I get for retirement homes, hearing aids, and cremation plans. Waiting are they? Well damn it, let them wait. Loren
