Telephone scammers target elders because they think a few of us won't be quick enough to get the scam. Got one yesterday, and since did not recognize the number let it go to the message machine. Fellow assured me I would be indicted and brought before a grand jury for tax evasion if I didn't call him back. He's called before and he'll call back again.

That same guy works for the Canada Revenue Agency. We have had a few calls from him, but are opting to just lay low, and keep an eye on the front door.

Getting rid of the house phone will be the first thing I do when my wife finally retires, as yet they haven't gotten to our cells. For now, everything goes to the not answering machine.

If you have a toddler child handy, give them the phone and tell the child Santa Claus wants to talk to them....

I usually answer with "City morgue, you stab 'em we slab 'em." I've been unsuccessfully evading taxes for years.

If I answer, I just get them started talking and then silently put the phone down.

I ask them a few questions which call into play their intelligence, parentage, and propensity for incestious relationships using some vocabulary I learned in the meat packing plant.
Never get the same one twice.

I did this once with some telemarketing finance guy. After about 10 minutes my 4 year old daughter walked over and said he wanted to talk to me. He started his spiel, and I handed the phone back to my daughter. Again after about 10 minutes she walked over and said he wanted to talk to me. Spiel starts and I hand the phone back to my daughter. It took this guy about 40 minutes to figure out that I wasn't going to talk to him. And it kept my daughter entertained so I could do something productive. I highly recommend it.

40 minutes - wow! My personal best was keeping the phony IRS man on the phone 17 minutes while I did my grocery shopping.

Oh yes they have! Get at least six a month. All we have are cells, gave up the land line few years ago. Last week the wife and I were at the hospital. She was getting an injection in her spine, and I was in the caf. Getting a coffee, her phone rings, I answer it- YOU HAVE WON AN ALL EXPENSE PAID--- I SAID WHATS MY NAME? Wha? IF YOU DON'T KNOW MY NAME , HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW I WON ANYTHING! Flip. Got a lot of chuckles from the poeple in the cafeteria.

I couldn't believe how persistent/stupid this guy was. And he apparently wanted to give me financial advice! But you know, I am so old that I can remember when airline seats were comfortable.

Bob, Unfortunately I get a couple of calls a day on average on my cell phone, know it's a scam but have to answer anyway as my cell phone is my business phone. No answer to my hello and I hang up. Thank G-d for unlimited minutes.

I tell the caller he/she has 30 seconds under Federal Law to identify him/herself AND 5 more to tell me the nickname for the USS Constitution. Many just hang up on me.

That depends on the job. I stopped answering any call on my business phone which didn't display a name from my contact list. If it was a legitimate call, they could leave a message and I would catch it when I listened to the message. I'm so old that I know that my schedule is not controlled by when other people want to call me.

Back to the "I am so old..." theme: when you call someone, you wait for them to answer and are ready when they do; if you have something better to do than wait for me (like being on another call in a scam call centre), I have lots of better things to do than to talk with you.

Good morning!! Glad you all woke up this morning "oldies"!
Isn't it good we all can complain, discuss, chat at our age?
If we couldn't, wouldn't be good. Thankful we made it to this day, enjoying every moment. Glad we all can have a chuckle once and a while, laugh about silly stuff. Even coffee spouting out D's nose..
"Old age" is not so bad after all!
