I have pretty much had this attitude all my life. I just never buy tickets. Well, every year Santa dips into my pocket and gives my wife $20 worth of quick picks.

I was turned off lottery tickets 30 years ago when involved in a workplace group purchase. I saw us win some, but rather than take these winnings and just add our regular weekly contribution, we just bought more tickets with the winnings, leaving the pot at $0.

Besides, about 25 years ago we had good friends win $10M. We saw them a couple times shortly after, but in time they drifted away.

I've not read about many folks actually enjoying the $ for long, seems most end up worse then they started.

Yes, I remember reading that a third of lottery winners go bankrupt, and others have regretted winning. But it doesn't have to be that way-- I also read of a man in Omaha (I think) who won a very large lottery. He bought a nice house in the suburbs, has professionals manage his money, and spends his days playing golf. So it can be done.

Just think, if the forum members had all agreed to purchase tickets, lets say 2500 x5 would be 12,500 tickets, good chance at winning $200,000 each....a lot of beers there.

I read something similar, like 80% of major lottery winners went bankrupt and the money generally ruined lives in general. We have what we think is a responsible plan for what if. Probably not though. And we probably won't win a darn thing either! So it's 2 bucks and a dream...

You folks sure are fun!

Yeah, including murder

I think it starts with the kind of person someone is before they win. Those that constantly want what they can't have and now they can have and they want it all. Winning a big lottery wouldn't make me happier. It would just relieve some stress... like having a landscaper instead of ME taking care of the dang yard. And someone else to paint the house! But, I don't want more of anything... except time to do items on my bucket list. I know I can't buy more time, but freeing up time by having 'others' do the work... is kinda like buying time. Right? Dream on!

(shopping for a Cabana Boy right now )

Just think, non stop rallies, all year long throughout the country, escaping the bad weather and enjoying the good weather, while someone else takes care of our responsibilities, is that not what we all want??

We have a local couple here near where we live that won a hundred million a year or two ago and are using a small amount of it for friendly loans to business owners they know. I could not tell you who they are, but they're older folks and did not go off their rocker with the money. Or they haven't yet...

All the more reason to just spend it all quickly! Actually my plan would be, after splitting some with family and friends, to donate to many environmental and conservation causes and then set up a foundation to provide scholarships and housing to those in need. Probably wouldn't keep much for myself since at that point there wouldn't be a need to save for my heirs!

Frank, that's a really nice way to spread the wealth!

Donna, I think the same way. I'd buy a small home on a lake somewhere, get someone to take care of the things needed at both houses, put money aside for my grandkids college educations, spring for a nice family vacation adventure for the 9 of us somewhere beautiful each year. Be able to do some good with the money for causes I support. That's about it. I'm already living the dream, retired on a good pension, fairly good health, about to pick up an Escape.

I thought that's what you -have- Jim.

Need beer and gas, might as well grab a $2 ticket as well. I'll mail it to Jim if I win.

Edit; on a side note, those who may set up a foundation/trust/what have you, should be aware of how much gets chopped off the top in various fees.

After reading about the woman in New England who tried to claim anonymity retroactively after winning a big lottery, I looked up Florida's rules on the subject. Here the name and hometown of a lottery winner must be published, but not the street address.

As there are four or five Michael Lewises in Milton, I'd just quietly claim my winnings then go on a long trip in my trailer, which I tend to do anyway. Let the other Michael Lewises fend off idiots. By the time I returned the hubbub would have died down and no one would care.

A few years ago, I was living in California. They had a lottery where the prize was $350 million. Thinking I could use that, I started buying one ticket a week ... then a few more. The news media was publishing how it was a "gold rush" for tickets and I realized that I needed some help to make my winning dream come true. So I started writing my friends names on each ticket I bought with the promise (to myself) that if that ticket won .... I'd call up that friend and ask "if they could use 35 million?" Of course my Karma would be so great ... How could I possibly lose?

That was the last time I used a slide rule to calculate my odds.

I remember telling you that I use my name in the forum because it's so common. Security through obscurity.

Not here at home, but when I was working I used to receive tasking for another Mike Lewis in my agency. Our jobs were similar enough (he was a software engineer, I think) that it would take me a while to figure out if the email was for me or for him. It would happen on a regular basis.

You got that right. That's what I'm doing today and so far I have:
- broken the sprayer
- spilled herbicide on me
- broken the cap on the herbicide container (how is that possible?)
All before noon. Now I'm out of herbicide and have to go to town to get more, cussing all the way.

So yeah, a landscaper would be on the list if I won a big prize.
