It was too good to last....

the warm winter weather, wearing shorts at Christmas time, now we are supposed to get anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of snow Friday/Saturday/Sunday, possibly more.
Time to gas up snow blower and tighten down BlackJack's hatches.

Good luck Jim - our seemingly warm one ended in snowstorms followed by below 0 weather.

Lake effect snow!

I chuckle when hearing about "big" snow storms. We live south of Lake Erie and receive tons of snow compared to the rest of the country. This picture was taken yesterday at my friends house. He received this amount of snow in just over 24 hours!

We lived east of Cleveland at one time and I remember going to a maple syrup festival near Chardon OH. They average about a hundred inches of snow a year which does not make them any kind of a snow champion but is a lot more than we get here in Eastern Iowa. There were a lot of nurseries in that country and around Cleveland because they average about 48 inches of precip a year and have good soil and not too cold in the winter. The old man used to say on an average run of weather in the winter "Every one of these counts off."

Lake effect snow!

The picture was taken in Sinclairville, NY.
The entire south shore of Lake Erie, from Cleveland to Buffalo, gets snow storms like this. The one good thing about Lake Erie is that it freezes over almost every year. This ice cover turns the lake effect snow machine off. Areas downwind of Lake Ontario and Lake Superior that get more snow than this.

In February, 2007, we had over 6' of snow in what was called the SuperBowl storm. A nearby town had over 12' during the same week. Some photos about 1/2 way down this page.

Wondering if rhubarb actually grows in Osoyoos......we've had a "blanket of snow " since a little before Christmas ( nothing like the photo above ) along with some colder than usual weather and not too many chinooks ( just short little ones - not enough to melt the snow away ). But now we are nearing the end of Jan. we really should be getting more chinooks - enough to get rid of the snow .

You wanna talk snow, go chat with the Yoopers.

Take a look at this scale from Keweenaw County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. All time low was 161.1" in the winter of 1999-2000, high was 390.4" or 32.5 ft in the winter of 1978-79.

Shortly after New Years we were visiting one of our daughters in the Matsu valley when the diesel overheated. Darn it, time for a new thermostat. We cut our visit short so we could limp home before it got dark. Halfway home I realized I had the winter radiator cover on, pulled over opened it up, problem solved. 50 degrees early January in Alaska, gotta love it. Scott

Just checked mine, just the barest hint of a shoot starting. The race is on with Baglo to see who can make a rhubarb pie first.

Six feet here, six feet there, and before you know it you're talking some pretty serious shoveling.

My local news said that the storm passing through here now is the storm that will dump all that snow on the mid-Atlantic region over the weekend. Sorry!

I remember being on the receiving end of these when I lived in Maryland. The storms would come up the coast and hit cold air from the north, turning all that rain to snow. For that reason sometimes D.C.'s Virginia suburbs got more snow than the Baltimore area, which is farther north.
