Thanks all

Wife and I are still carrying DVD's around. What we do have are his and hers Mac Book pro's amazon prime and were trying to figure out if the Apple tv would work. From my limited understanding you can download to the apple TV and just carry that.

Our truck also is a wifi hot spot for what thats worth. From all the info out there where is the best place for us to start. Our TV is also a Vizio. We usually listen to music on a thumb drive but rainy day movies would be good too.

As stated above, you can download to an iPhone or iPad but NOT to a laptop as others have stated. I then got an adapter which should allow me to hook the iPhone to my TV or laptop with an HDMI cable but that’s not working. I searched for an answer and only came up with “this doesn’t work anymore/Netflix and Apple need to work it out”.

Anyone able to get this to work??
I downloaded from Netflix to my laptop, no problem. You do have to use the app and not do it from a browser, but there are lots of movies and shows to download.

But, Jim, is your laptop connected to the internet when you go to stream those downloaded Netflix movies? And do you guys watch the movies on the laptop's or are you trying to mirror the screen up onto a TV?

It is downloaded so no need to stream.

I am new to this concept using Netflix so gave it a try to make sure. I shut down my WiFi connection and the movies play just fine.

When travelling my laptop is my TV control for the most part. I have a portable DVD player should we bring some that connects to it, have downloaded movies from various sources stored on it, and just us a HDMI cable to connect to the TV. We also use a Bluetooth speaker for better sound.

I stand (happily!) corrected! Things are looking up for playing back stored media when we're out boondocking. The big services (Amazon Prime, Amazon Video, Netflix, and Google Red) Do allow offline playing of stored video. Here's a compendium of recent services' statuses:

This free app works quite well to download Netflix to a Windows laptop.

Once you have downloaded the files can you transfer them to a USB drive to plug into the TV, or do you have to play them from the laptop?

That's going to depend on your television file requirements. The download format for Netflix is MP4, which my 7 year old television doesn't read.

However, when I plug the USB drive into my Sony smart DVD player it will upconvert the MP4 file and deliver it to the television as 1080p using an HDMI cable as usual. As both television and DVD player run off 12V, I don't need an inverter.

I have the separate DVD player as the CD player in my television only does 480p resolution and won't play Blu-Ray disks.

The USB MP4 files do play fine on my home TV, which is 3 years old and one of those "Smart TVs"

DVD only does 480P and won't play BluRay. you need a BluRay player to play BluRay disks.

CD only does audio, or low quality (360p) VideoCD format, although you can store computer files on CD-R disks.

Here’s the difference. There is no MacOS Netflix app but there is for Windows. There is no option to download a movie to a Mac laptop from Netflix.com or stream from an iPhone/iPad to a Mac laptop.

But there is a solution that I may try - you can install Windows on you Mac and just switch to it to use the Windows Netflix app and I’m reading that there is a download option with it.

Another solution would be to dump the Kool-Aid and buy a Windows laptop. [emoji12]
