That brochure appears to be for the Basecamp, which has been out for many years now. Interesting trailer, I looked at it at one time. Pretty minimal amenities in it.

Yes, they stopped making the Basecamp about 5 years ago, it was basically a cargo carrier, this new now has a bath, heated tanks, full galley, nice inside. Love the panoramic window.

Nothing new on the Nest out there. You can sign up for updates here. This link was shown before somewhere.

Ah, I see. They added the amenities I thought were lacking.

I can't seem to open the brochure for some reason.

AND, their heating/hot water system is the Truma Combi which I think would be a great fit in an Escape.

You have to add the air conditioning, solar, and microwave to that price point. Might get to see one next week at the Hershey RV show.

When I saw the e-mail from Airstream announcing the Basecamp, I thought something was very broken in their promotional system, since the Basecamp came out and flopped long ago. Then I realized that the new Basecamp has the same overall shape as the 2007 original, but is very different in details and equipment. For some uses, it actually looks quite desirable... unlike the nearly useless original.

The link is to a "thank you" page which apparently comes after a download; the brochure page requires you to enter contact information before you can download a brochure... which I find bizarre and annoying.

The new Basecamp has a front kitchen (like some 15' trailers and the inside-kitchen T@b), a side bath, and a rear dinette. It also has a rear door, which is the "toybox" feature carried over (along with the shape) from the original Basecamp. Compared to an Escape 17', it is almost as long, and a bit wider, weighs almost as much, has really high tongue weight, and has less interior functionality. Maybe not a winner by the specs, but I do like the shape (round front, Kamm tail, tapered body), and the Truma Combi™ eco plus high-efficiency furnace and water heater (with integrated electric heater). Of course, it's a pile of aluminum sheets and rivets...

Thats really confusing, so they are calling what we think of the Nest the Basecamp? Why would they call it something that was an old model and wasn't overly successful from what I have read. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick!

No, the Nest and Basecamp are very different in construction, although similar in size. They're not related.

It does have the same shape as the original Basecamp, which is quite different from other current and recent Airstreams. It is also aimed at the same "active lifestyle" market. I think it's a second try at the same model, so I understand using the same name again, but the spectacular failure of the first one does seem like it might be detrimental to sales of the new one... and it will at least be confusing. On the other hand, auto manufacturers re-use model names all the time on substantially different vehicles.

Looking for information on the original Basecamp for comparison, I ran across an interesting bit of information: it had a moulded composite structure (instead of riveted aluminum ribs like a normal Airstream), wrapped in Airstream's traditional aluminum.

I wonder how the new one is constructed?

An interesting item from the Basecamp's specifications:
Quote:
Goodyear® ST255/55R18 Tires
Other than one model of Carlisle in 60-series, Special Trailer (ST) tires come in a very narrow range of sizes, all 75 to 85 aspect ratio, and no larger than 16" wheel diameter. That 55-series size is common for SUVs, but very surprising for an ST tire. I can't find it in Goodyear's website. Either Airstream had Goodyear make a special model for them (which is possible given a large enough purchase commitment), or Airstream is using a different type of tire for this model. In that size, if it's not a special ST, it is likely a Euro-metric (so 255/55R18, with no "ST" or other letters in front) in an XL (Extra Load) rating.

The significance to Escape owners is that if you want tires similar to those on your tow vehicle, Airstream may have made them available in an ST tire; also, even if the tires are not ST you can use commonly available tires with the same 18" wheels (about 8" wide) as Airstream, which apparently fit a Torflex #10 axle. This tire size is suitable for a 3500 pound capacity axle, and is a couple of inches taller (in overall diameter) than the ST205/75R15 used by Escape.

That's the same brochure I found at the first link, and I didn't have to fill in any information for it to download.
Neither the trailer, nor the price, appeal to me.

There is a couple of slides showing the construction, talking about a 3 ply wall where the outside metal does not touch the interior, heated floor with heated combined gray/black tank, those panoramic windows maybe acrylic similar to the Nest?

It seems the hubs are not available as it doesn't say STD or OPT.

This is a very cool trailer for the right buyer, but myself, I much prefer the Nest for how we would use either. While both of these are great looking, well thought out trailers for the size, they are still not for me, even if they were cheaper.

It seems they do a great job insulating the walls and floor, but those huge windows, which seem to be only single glazed, will be a big source for heat loss, unless I missed something. Robert had said the Nest would have, or at least be able to have, dual glazed windows.
