The plan was to invade along three routes: the West Coast to Vancouver, Minnesota to Winnepeg (I think), and somewhere in the east, probably from New York to Toronto. It's been a while so I don't quite remember the details.

The Canadian government at the time was aware of the plan and had a countermeasure: a preemptive strike into the U.S. along the three routes. The goal was to delay the American advance until the U.K. and others could come to Canada's aid. The title of the Washington Post article was "Raiding the Icebox".

We were going to invade Canada in the 1920s over a trade dispute. OK, I'll buy that

As long as I’m dragging this thread out re the Canada-US border...in 2013 I was driving to Canada to pick up my Escape trailer. I never had a problem crossing the border. I’d lived in Canada, gone to school there. But as I crossed from N Dakota to Manitoba I got stopped. Border agent wanted to know who I was going to see, wanted the phone number, which I provided. Hard to believe, but the people I was going to see picked up the phone at dinner time and said, “Yes, let him in.” So I drove on to Kamloops and spent some money on my trailer and had a good time.

But for a brief period I thought I couldn’t go to Canada. Maybe never again if I was on some kind of list for who knows what reason. It would be a tremendous loss.

Then I realized that the Boston Marathon bombing happened that week, so border security was on high alert. Even for those of us who always believe we have the privilege to pass without question. That bombing was bad, and I understand how it heightened border security. But I learned (as I probably should have already known) what it’s like to be locked out of a country, if only for a short time. You get a real sense of loss.

Thank you all for restoring my faith in humanity. This is the best non-political political discussion I could possibly imagine.

“Thinking out loud”?

More like demented chess x 3. Not to be confused with 3 dimensional chess.

Let’s take a poll
How many Forum members have ever driven and operated a Zamboni planing the ice on a rink? I did once and wasn’t very good. They laughed at me and hurt my feelings.

I haven't. But my paternal grandfather was good friends with the man who invented the machine.

Well there you go. I was in Dubuque Iowa at their ice facility one day. It was run by the city and we were considering building a facility in our city. They were just putting the rink back in service after maintenance and the surfacing operator invited me to try a couple passes. I have a picture somewhere. That was in about 1988 or so. It’s been a while. We planed outdoor rinks for speed skating. Pulled the planet with pickups on ponds. Yes we dipped a few. Thin ice and political pressure over ruled common sense at times.

If Greenland is slowly covering with ice and Iceland is lowly losing their ice, will they eventually need to swap names?

My son underwent 2 weeks of training on the college Zamboni before they would let him drive it during a game. He got a real kick out of the crowd cheering him when he finally did a game. Unfortunately, the guy he was temporarily replacing came back to work, so no more Zamboniing...
