RVs you had before your Escape

Ok, the weather is atrocious here today, and I'm spending far too much time sitting in my chair with my laptop. But JimB said something about always having a trailer, and it made me think it might be fun to share some pictures of trailers and/or other RVs we had before our Escapes.

So, I'll start it off with my first from 1973 shown here on the beach at Padre Island and in whatever LA suburb my brother was living in back then.

As you can see it was an aerodynamic marvel!

I offered $1,000 to a co-worker for his tent trailer, which had spent ten years in his garage, unused. He countered with $900.
Used it for many years and sold it for $650.

Jon your cheating with a tent! Its at least gotta have wheels!

Glenn that looks about the same size as my #2 which was a Coleman Sedona popup - no pictures of it. Before the Econoline and after it for a couple of decades, until the Coleman in about 1992, it was all tents.

I too was an avid backcountry traveller, by foot, ski or canoe, sleeping in lean-tos, under the stars, tents, snow shelters, and the odd cabin. I still like to do this kinda stuff. It is what real camping is all about.

However, I succumbed to being a gorbie, and bought a new Coleman tent trailer about 27 years ago when the kids were tiny, and had it for 7 years. It was great, as it had a ton of bed space, and provided us with a comfy way to take our wee kids out camping. A playpen served as a crib for our youngest.

We then bought a 24' Fleetwood bunk model trailer, which we owned for about 11 years. Just before we bought it, I bough our rec property with my brothers, and the trailer stayed there as a cabin, with the exception of a few holidays per year. Got lots of use, and worked good for us.

The kids grew, and still camped with us (as they do now) but preferred tents as opposed to staying in the trailer, so we went on a search for something more towable and decided on a moulded fibreglass trailer for all the reason you all know. At that time Reace announced that he was planning on putting out a new 19' model, and we were all over it, put down a deposit before ever seeing one, and the rest is history. It was about the 6th one off the line in 2009.

We then got rid of our 19 with a plan of getting the new model 5.0TA, but with problems with getting the moulds done in any decent time, we bought our temporary Rustler 22' fifth wheel to use last year, as we needed a trailer for already planned trips. A bit of spit an polish and it worked quite well for us.

In 5 days I pick up my brand new 2017 5.0TA.

So where's some photos folks?

Ok here is #3 for us- a used Rialta by Winnebago. It was well made, drove really nicely and we really liked it. The problem was no one wanted to work on it. Winnebago stated in the manual to just take them to any VW dealer for service - nope. None of the dealers within hundreds of miles of us were willing to work on them and none of the independent local garage or RV places wanted to touch it.

We needed a thermostat changed and after reading about what a miserable job it was to change one, I decided I was too lazy to do it. I thought I could talk my favorite local mechanic to do it, tried bribery and pleading - flat out refused. I finally talked the service manage at VW dealer about 60 miles away into agreeing to doing it, but he would give me no estimate on the cost. I think the poor mechanic who delegated was low man on the totem pole, as they had no lift tall enough to raise it, so he go to lay underneath it. About 3 hours later he ias finally done and soaked in antifreeze - costing us nearly $300.

While we liked it very much, owning a vehicle that was that hard to get anyone to work on seemed far less than ideal to be traveling across the country in.

The best thing about the Rialta was they were so rare and no longer in production, that I sold it for more than we paid for it. So we bought a used Tacoma that led us #4...

First RV

My first was a Scamp 13, so we wouldn't have to wake up to ice on the sleeping bags in a tent.

My second is an older Scamp 13, in order to get the jalousie windows. I added a gravity furnace too.

I would like an Escape 15, floorplan "A" someday...

I went through two 17' Casitas before getting my current 21. I might get another 21.

The tent trailer is on negatives and prints, so can't post here without scanning.

Donna did you put bigger wheels on your Scamp?

I have thousands of negatives and slides to scan. I first have to buck up to buy a good used photo scanner, spend countless hours scanning, then resell the scanner. After that there is the editing, a weak link in my digital photography.

Another good reason for retirement.
