Here’s a question for all but AZ Jack. What do you notice when they are towing in the mountains as opposed to when they started out? Jack showed this to me.

It is that fifth wheel trailer contraption that takes the tongue weight off the mercury rear

The fist time I watched the show (several years ago) I noticed that the 1953 Mercury Monterey convertible tow vehicle was not consistently used in all scenes. Sometimes it is replaced with a larger but similar appearing 1953 Lincoln Capri convertible.

Right you are. The Lincoln had a larger engine about 25 horsepower that they needed to pull the 6,000 lb trailer in the Sierra Madres where the curvy mountain scene was filmed. When Jack pointed that out to me I told him I knew it was something like that but couldn’t put my finger on it. As I watched it a couple months later I realized the Lincoln grill gives it away. Read up on those early 50s Lincoln’s. They were something. About 50 K for a nice one now. Can you see yourself pulling a 21 into Osoyoos with one? Here’s a 37 Ford one ton pulling a Scamp 19 that was at Durango a couple years ago. Small block Chevy, throttle body injection the owner told me. Congrats on the answer. I consider Lucille Ball one of the most athletic actresses of her day. She’s fun to watch

We used to pull a two horse trailer with a Lincoln in the late 60s. It was powerful with a truck transmission I pulled horses up the mountains with no problems. It was a beast.

I just wonder about the trailer pulling scenes in the movie, I've restored a few old ford and merc. flathead engines, ,which is what the 53 mercy had, last year for the flathead, it put put 125 hp according to specs, that longtrailerhad to weigh 10k plus, I think it's very possible they had a trailer 'gutted out' {just a shell with no inside components} so the mercy could pull it, ??

The movie
I was doing a little additional reading up on this movie.
If you google “long long trailer trivia” there’s considerable info on this movie and the trailer.
I think there was a mid year shift in the engine availabilities when the Flathead was discontinued and thought it was 53 but maybe it was 1954? My brother had a 1950 Mercury and I had a 1950 F-1 both with Flathead 8s. I had the pickup yet when I got married in 1970.
Rita and I took it from Iowa to Idaho in 4 days in late May of 70. The Interstate was being built then I can tell you it was an effort to push that F1 over those Montana passes. And over the Lolo Pass west of Missoula. Can you say double clutch and vacuum windshield wipers?
