The Rainmaker

It is raining like rip at my current location, Oasis State Park near Portales, New Mexico. It rained at my previous stop, Bottomless Lakes SP near Roswell (no aliens, just rain). It rained at my location before that, Oliver Lee SP south of Alamogordo. It rained in Big Bend (!). And it rained in Fredericksburg, Texas, while I was there.

All of these locations except for Fredericksburg are desert, mind you, or semi-arid, and Fredericksburg isn't a tropical rain forest. And it's not "monsoon season" either. I'm detecting a pattern here. So I am suggesting to our California members that they petition their governor to sponsor me for a while in their beautiful state. I will solve your problems. Your drought problems, anyway.

Wow, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but at least you have a good attitude about the weather Mike. I like the idea of the sponsorship too!

But, I'm glad it's you and not me!

I know the feeling too well. Do you remember the floods that hit Nashville a few years back? That was us. Happened so much I had bumper stickers made up with this little guy, and stuck it to the TV and the old trailer. Aztek weather god of some sort.

OK, so put on your rubber hoodie, get out your Nikonos, and show us the pictures.

Yup, and when you're done there you can bring the rain about a hundred miles south.

Okay, I don't have pictures of the rain, but here are a few touristy photos. Roswell hosts a couple of nice art galleries that would be at home in much larger cities. I've included a photo of the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art.

Portales is home to Eastern New Mexico University. Science fiction author Jack Williamson lived and taught here, and I visited his special collection at the university. Below are photos of his Hugo and Nebula awards.

Finally, a couple of miles from Oasis State Park is the Blackwater Draw archeological dig, where the "Clovis people" were discovered. This is the oldest known settlement in the U.S., dating back 12,000 years.

Hi, neighbor. If it's any consolation, the weather back in your hometown is, and is predicted to stay, absolutely beautiful! The only thing keeping us from camping this week is a couple of wrens that have built a nest under the spare tire cover on our Escape, and my wife won't let us disturb them until the babies have left the nest. In the future I'm going to keep the cover off the spare until we hit the road.

Ah yes-- critters in Florida, getting into everything you own. One good thing about being a Floridian is you get used to this, and are thus unfazed by animals when you're traveling. Moth infestation in your trailer? Bah. Snake sauntering through your campsite while you're sitting in a chair outside? Meh. That one would have made a good photo for the "what's outside your back window?" thread, but I wasn't quick enough on the draw.

Hopefully your little wrens will leave the nest soon and you can go camping.
