They are back

I noticed male lovebugs the other day and today the roads have swarms of them coupled up. I guess it's going to be a bumper lovebug year. Figures, I looked up our route for Monday and we will be traveling right through prime lovebug mating territory.
So it looks like a midnight run is in order. I'll have some moths and whatever the huge bugs are that make the loud thump and leave the red blood looking juice on the windshield. But will miss the joy of cleaning stinky hard to remove lovebug carcasses off the truck and trailer.
Hopefully I'll miss the mayfies too, those impressed us a couple years back with the swarms, the layers of them on the ground in a couple rest stops and a gas station and the smell.
But they seemed a lot easier to clean off.
But I'd like to avoid them, either going up or coming back from BC.
Is there any good site or android ap that shows where mayfly hatches are occurring?

Glad you are keeping the love bugs down south. On the other hand, the Adirondack black flies actually take a chunk out of you when they bite, so all areas have their bug problem (well, not at Quartzsite during the winter- never been there for the summer).

AZ has it's share

Yesterday we found a brown recluse spider in our back patio area and this morning I found two cactus that had been partially eaten by our local herd of javalina. I hate to feed them but they were here first.

Hopefully we are now out of the lovebug swarms . I managed to remove all the remains from the car and trailer before dark. I had planned on driving through Florida and south Georgia at night but the weatherman lied and said it was going to rain. Sure,, it was sunny all the way up after I got about 30 miles from home.

Love bugs are really bugs? I just thought it was two people in love.

yep, the males come out first and are smaller than the females. They hook up and fly aimlessly around or so it seems. They are attracted to light colors and hydrocarbons. So lot of them will be on the roads. If you do not wash them off within a day their remains will etch your paint.

So where the neck did they ever get the name 'love' bug?
