Trashing of Lake Shasta Campground

Sad to see this story. Students from the University of Oregon trashed a campsite on Slaughterhouse Island at Lake Shasta - so badly that it's taking weeks to clean up.

When you see young people with no respect for anything or anyone, you wonder what they teach at universities these days. Not to mention the parents....

It is not the responsibility of the University to instill a sense of morality and ethical behaviour in their students, that job is for the parents and it should be done long before they get to university age.

This does not surprise me……..
Our family has had season tickets to Stanford football games for almost a century. Our seats are right next to the opposing teams student section, for the most part the students are drinking and rowdy ( no alcohol sales in the stadium) . The Oregon fans stand out significantly as completely disrespectful both in the pre game tail-gating and in the stadium behavior.

The fraternity should be paying for -- and participating in -- the cleanup, not just saying "sorry."

However, there is another dynamic. You keep kids locked up in school until they are 18 -- being popular means doing things your parents never taught you to do -- they have to raise their hands to go to the bathroom, and then suddenly they are on a college campus and free to do anything they want, whenever they want. Some of the schools our kids attended don't have enough housing, so they rely on the fraternities -- and the peer pressure kicks in.

This is an extreme example of what goes on every day at our colleges.

And even though none of our adult kids ever did anything so disrespectful as teens, I hesitate to lambaste the parents. Society has structured it so that our kids are teaching each other social skills from the time they are five years old and it's not working out so well. Remember "Lord of the Flies?"

When on a road trip in Pennsylvania from my college to an inter-mural basketball tournament we partied hearty all night in a motel room with players from a military college. It ended up with those guys wanting to trash the room big time, for no apparent reason other than they were drunk and feeling free of the restraints of school. (??!!) The party ended with us kicking them out.

No one can control themselves when they have consumed too much alcohol. Add a little peer pressure at college and you can just pray for your children. Here's a good article.

Well, there is a bright side. This gal proclaims herself to be an artist. If we toss her and others like her in prison, then we can all have pretty license plates like South Carolina.
