US National Parks Senior Pass

For those of us that do not already have the $10 lifetime geezer pass, might want to get one soon. Our friends in Washington are looking to bump it up to $80. A good deal either way, but saving $70 isn't a bad thing to do.

From H.R.4680
Sec. 102) The Department of the Interior (for a federal land management agency) and the Department of Agriculture (for the Forest Service) shall make the National Parks and Federal Lands Pass available to any U.S. citizen or person residing in the United States who is 62 years of age or older for:
  • a period of 12 months from the date of issuance at a cost of $20; and
  • the lifetime of the passholder at a cost (currently $10) equal to the cost of the National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass.

For me the horrible news is that in five more months I qualify for the senior pass and for SS.

Senior pass

For me the staggering reality is that I've had mine for seven years now. I visited one of my old park shops today. Neither of the two guys there knew me and both were born after I started with the city in 1985. I was able to identify a picture from the 50s. It was a park guy feeding a banana to some Capuchins at Bever Park. They were impressed. ( or just being kind to an old guy.)

Too bad the US will not let Canadians get them. It would definitely bring more retired Canadians to the National Parks. Next year when our National Parks are free for the year, we extended that to everyone, from outside the country too.

No, that is not horrible news. Just look in the obituaries at all of those who have died younger than you are. Every birthday you celebrate is very good news. Loren

Pointing out again, that doesn't mean free camping. Just free to drive through the national parks and maybe have lunch at a picnic table.

Only valid with U.S. Geezer Pass. Maybe you can get a C.C.G. (Canadian Cousin Geezer ) Pass

LOL. I would love it if they would. I would certainly take advantage of it, that's for certain.

I've had mine for slightly over 2 years now and only because I didn't want to admit I could get one.

Both Rita and I have a pass. When we are with any of the kids, we stop at the entry sign and take a picture. If we're with the kids and their car, one of us slides behind the wheel of their car and we proceed to the fee booth where we present the pass. The free entry into the park is good for the whole car. Two cars, no problem we just have a romantic breakup for ten minutes. Just like buck night at the Drive In just less "stamina".

Donna and I each got our own as well. It does come in handy when traveling with friends or family. Have even used our pass in Puerto Rico and the various NP facilities there. Best $10 ($20 for 2) that we ever spent. If you are eligible I would advise you to get your ASAP before the price goes up.

Just got mine, too! There is a National Forest with a Ranger Station just 12 miles from our house. Too convenient and inexpensive to pass up. My wife is still too young to get her own, but mine is good for me +3, so we're good to go! Thanks for the heads-up on this....

I bought mine on my birthday when I became eligible. Was wondering when Washington would realize what a great deal it was and grab more money.

Enjoy them while you can. Next year they'll all be auctioned off to KOA, Good Sam, etc.

Teddy Roosevelt founded the National Park Service and doubt anyone of any persuasion would seek to privatize it- that would not be a great thing.
