VW Camping Van

Just returned from vacation where we had the opportunity to visit the VW plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. This beauty caught my eye and thought you might enjoy seeing what's 'new' in the camping arena (this is the "California Ocean" series). If you want one, it will only set you back about $91K Euros or about $107K U.S. The second photo is how they store the cars for those people who pick up at the factory.

An automotive Pez dispenser. Ya gotta love it. Makes sense when land is at such a premium. You can fit a few European countries into a typical Canadian province.
Germany ~350,000 sq km.
Quebec ~1,500,000 M sq km.

Are you sure the facility wasn't simply a re-purposed WWII German missile silo? Kinda has that look....

Yep, we were told that their intent was to offer them in the U.S. Can't imagine how they would be able to get away with those prices, however. And, if you buy from the factory, you have to add in the VAT and, possibly, a luxury tax! In looking at some of the various models displayed, the cheapest car we saw (some little hybrid) was $35K Euros.

All we could think about was how one could buy two+ Escape trailers for the price of that van ..

The values of these vans are quite crazy. Check out these listings from a company in California who specializes in restoring and reselling these vans: Vehicles for Sale | GoWesty

My wife and I had an '87 Vanagon Westfalia for about 4 years. A few years ago, we sold it in mostly original original condition for over $22K!

And check out what they charge to rent them. $170 a night at a place in Kelowna BC, looked at one in Colorado as well - from $150-$225 a night depending on time of year. Wow is right.

Volkswagen has not sold vans in North America for many years, other than a Chrysler minivan re-badged as the VW Routan. It's an import tariff issue for the U.S., and most companies won't bring anything to Canada if they're not bringing it to the U.S.

Of course this would change if VW decides to build them in the U.S., which seems unlikely.

Although I'm not sure which rental company this would be, I note that Okanagan Westfalia Rentals is renting old VWs, from when they were sold here. The $170/night units featured on their website are T3's (third generation Transporter or "Vanagon"), last sold in North America in 1991.
