We salute you Canadians

Today, April 15th, we wave the Canadian flag and salute the Royal Canadian Dragoons who liberated my hometown Leeuwarden, today 70 years ago.

I cannot thank the Dragoons enough for doing this for my hometown.

By all accounts, the Dragoons were a bunch of bad asses. Be proud Canada!

Not me, but my good buddy Ray Allan ( now 90 years old ). He's had his way paid to Holland a couple times for the celebrations. He gave me his dog tags. Apparently there were three. One went to the Red Cross ( I think ), one to the family and one stayed with the remains.
He's still carrying shrapnel.

Thanks Seef,

We took our boat through Europe in the canals and wintered it in Holland. Our Canadian flag drew constant waves and honks and we were welcomed and told many stories from people whose parents had billeted Canadians during the war.

Our war memorial says "lest we forget". It's obvious to me the Dutch haven't.

Thanks,

Ron

My Dad was part of the Boys that liberated Holland in 45 " 4th Tank Core" and always spoke of how kind and thankful everyone was , fond memories for him . He's gone now but not forgotten . I got his tags , there cotton and leather so they would not tinkle or shine in the sun . Who knew .

Ray's assignment was to run wires and microphones into enemy territory ahead of the front lines. The microphones helped determine range that enabled the artillery to hit their targets.

In my early working life, I worked with guys, who'd been with the Canadian Army in the Liberation of Holland- Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI). They had previously fought in Italy.
They each spoke with positive memories on Holland and more importantly Dutch people.
Thank you for recognizing them.

I'll always remember walking through the streets of Harderwijk with my wife's cousin Wim. He was well known in town and knew all the old timers. He would introduce me to them"this my neef Mark his father was in the Canadian Militair and his mother was from Engeland". Everyone would give me a hug or shake my hand.

My wife and our daughter, then 18, were on a month-long home exchange in Bergen, Netherlands, five years ago, and the 90-year old mother of our host who lived nearby insisted on meeting us to thank us personally for the liberation of her Dutch village by Canadian soldiers near the end of WWII. Her English was quite good, and she told us vivid stories of how one morning the uniforms of the soldiers on the streets were different, and like magic the Nazi oppressors had been replaced by friendly, smiling guys handing out gifts and giving the locals, especially the young women like her, rides up and down the main street on their military vehicles. That dear woman just passed on last month, but her memory of the liberation, and her gratitude for it, were intact until the end.

Very touching. Thanks for sharing this. There's a reason why they call those who fought in WWII "the greatest generation".

Today is Memorial Day here in the US and I just wanted to give a salute to all of our veterans, past and present and also all of the Canadian veterans as well. Your sacrifices will never be forgotten. Loren, US Army vet

I too am am very grateful to all of those who have served us, and especially those that fell doing so.

I have a bit of confusion with the specific US holidays though. What is the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day? in Canada we only observe Remembrance Day, which is Nov 11, just like Veterans Day.

What my uninformed understanding is, is that today, Memorial Day, is specifically intended to remember those who died while serving, and that Veterans Day is the day set aside to to honour all that served. Am I close on this?
