If it is followed by an "i" or an "e" it is generally soft (there are exceptions). If followed by an "a, o, or u" it is generally hard. However, any word ending with a "g" the pronunciation is always hard. Hence, "frig" would always be pronounced with a hard g, as Jim indicated in his original post. Therefore, frig and frige would be pronounced differently, however, the correct spelling of the shortened name of the appliance in question actually includes a "d" (fridge).
Ha, ha, Carl, I am aware of all of that but the person who wrote it simply misspelled it --- at least that is my guess --- so of course no rule was followed! Rules in English, though, are often very inconsistent.

I consider "frige" to be in the same category as "frig." I actually usually use "refrigerator." Go figure.

Pat, you are too funny. You know I love my frig! I have to feel sorry for those with that friggin' 4.3 though.

There are getting to be so many friggin' fridge models and problems that one can hardly keep up.
