That is why they are called "stingers", they sting like a bee....

That's the reason I usually pulled the stinger once we got setup. You'd think I'd learn after the 4th or 5th bruise, not to mention the grease.

I too used to pull the ball mount when stopped, mostly to eliminate the grease. I learned many years ago the dangers of shins vs hitches. After a bunch of years now of having first the Andersen WDH, and now the Andersen Ultimate Fifth Wheel hitch, I have been forever converted to nylon balls, to avoid messy grease.

With this, Andersen is one company that has stepped to the plate with their full adjustable Rapid Hitch. I don't imagine it would work with most of the WDHs out there though.

I've gotten in the habit of taking off the hitch as part of the trailer set up procedure. If you remove the hitch, you don't have to move the vehicle to raise or lower the trailer for leveling. Plus you have the added benefit of never seeing your hitch stolen. I believe that New York State will give you a ticket if the hitch is on if the trailer is not attached to it.

As soon as the coupler is off, we remove the grease with a shop towel. Thirty seconds.

If I recall correctly, this topic came up a while back. At that time I reported that I had whacked my shins on trailer hitches every year for the past 50 or so years. Since then I have gotten quite a bit better at avoiding the stinger. I think it's because the WDH stinger is big and I've learned to see and avoid it as opposed to a small straight stinger like I use on my fishing boat.
Also, I've been relagated to scrubbing the grease out of my pants after my darling bride let me know she wasn't going to do it any longer. And I learned that there's some liability issues and laws against no trailer stinger still on motoring. Without a ticket or an accident. Old dog, new tricks. A myth debunked.

Wish I had known about these when I had a bumper pull.

I rarely pull the ball mount, even when not towing, as I am constantly hooking up to one trailer or another at work. Maybe this is why I have for the most part learned to avoid them. Plus, in my F250, it makes a great step to get up into the toolbox mounted in the box.

You'd also probably break a knee cap as opposed to banging your shin.

It looks like Andersen nor Reece makes the greaseless hardballs in 2" size anymore.

Sounds interesting, but don't you still need to grease the coupler which would then get grease on the nylon?

It is a fact that my soon to be 9 year old grandson has an inseam about 4 inches less than mine. It's also a fact that I have long enjoyed the old novelty tune Mr. Five by Five. I knew two people over the years who very much resembled the description in that song and both were good friends of mine. My old parks and rec director, a fairly tall woman of German descent, used to call me Stubby.

I'd leave it dry, defeat the purpose of the ball if you greased the coupler.

okay please explain the logic behind giving someone a ticket for having a stinger on a vehicle with no trailer attached?

are they trying to imply that if you do, that you are a thief and trolling for trailers?

Probably something to do with having something extend beyond the normal dimensions of the vehicle and bumper. It is not flagged or equipped with warning lights... Just guessing, but probably in the Vehicle Code.....

My guess is to raise money for the state. Remember when red meant stop, green meant go and amber meant the light was getting ready to turn red? Now, with cameras at traffic lights, the municipalities make money while auto body shops get work from all the collisions caused by drivers slamming on brakes to avoid Tickets!

In the event of a rear end collision, a stinger will penetrate the bumper of the rear vehicle and cause more damage than a collision in which the bumpers meet. That could also be part of their rationale. But, it's true that many state governments never met a new law or fine they didn't like.

its seems in Texas they don't give tickets for this since so many vehicles are driving with stingers and no trailer...guess keeping track of all the various laws in each state as it pertains to towing an rv is going to be a constant headache....
