Yachts
Today I had a personal aha moment. While investigating equipment that could be used on either an RV or sailboat I realized that yachts are, in fact, RV's for rich people. Which makes RV's yachts for the rest of us. I know, it's super obvious if you give it any thought.

Hi: sclifrickson... Yachts and yachts of people feel the same way. We own a land yacht. It's a lot less expensive than the other kind. Alf

Never owned a yacht but have had boats and still have two boats. Is it true that the two happiest days of you life are the day you buy your boat and the day you sell it? Answer. Yes

Took my boat to the dump, tied the stern to a tree and drove the trailer out from under it. 'nuf said.

Sailboats
Having owned sailboats and sailed a lot I can confirm a few things
1. If you want to know what it feels like to own a sailboat just stand in a cold shower and rip up $100 bills
2. Sailboat purchases only come in SBU's. SBU=Standard Boat Unit = $1000
3. If you think it is expensive owning a trailer, buy a sailboat
Having said all that I still love sailing and still go for a week in the Gulf Islands every year. Only difference is we charter a boat for the week.

Well at least those last couple of comments confirm that the soft sucking sound often heard around launching ramps is in fact, wallets being sucked dry. All the while I thought it was top feeding fish.

Being an ex-Harley owner, I can tell you that HD stands for "hundred dollar" as in $300 oil changes and $400 for a new tire and so on.....

I'd not thought of comparing our "Cute Little 17b" to a yacht.
I do, however, tell my friends that living in it while camping is like living in a little sailboat.

I went sailing on a buddy's boat once.
My beer kept falling over.

In my case the ratio is about 5:1 but when moored in Monaco or Porto Cervo the folks on the superyachts look down on you like you're a filthy old fish boat. All the while being unhappy that their megayacht isn't as attention getting as the next one.
Having been used to high quality marine gear all my life I do find RV offerings to be pretty low quality by comparison.
But yes, we do use the trailer the same way we used the boat. We travel to a place, see what there is to see, rarely staying for two nights and move on to new places, trailer or boat, no difference for us.

Fun to hear the comments! When retiring at 52 I quickly came to the realization that it was time for us to delve into cabin cruiser territory. We had chartered sailboats frequently and owned one in our 20's but never really got very far from home with our limited two weeks vacation. We purchased a 1988 Bayliner 32 with very little technical knowledge and have had the best four years of our lives learning and experiencing the wonder of the Pacific Northwest! Now we are getting ready to order a fifth wheel and travel during our winter season! There are some similarities however still quite a learning curve, which we love! Just bought our tow vehicle a 2010 Tundra SR5 (an early retirement gift for my husband)!

I don't see what the big deal is about boats. You sail up the lake, you sail down the lake. At least with an Escape trailer you can stop and get fries at the Burger King.

I finally sold our 22' sailboat after one typical windless outing of sitting around doing nothing in the hot sun. During this outing my wife looked over at some people racing around in a little motorboat and said, "I bet they're having fun." Anyway, that's when we bought our first trailer - I'd had enough of the entire boating thing.

We are hoping to sell our 35' Island Packet to help in financing our 21' Escape. Many similarities and I'm sure, there will be many differences. Hopefully not BOAT bucks (bring out another thousand) every time we go to use it. But I don't think you can equal a day's sailing and a quiet anchorage with the pelicans.

My mom and step dad own a 40ft sail boat they love it. My mom is 84 and my step dad is 86 so they don't travel far any more but they still go out exploring the puget sound and stay over one or two nights. I can only imagine when they pull into a dock my mom really can't jump out of the boat to tie off so I'm guessing they rely on the help of strangers. Thank goodness there are a lot of good strangers around!

A lot of times those people are the ones that own the boats moored ahead and astern of the slip where their're docking. Self preservation Having said that, I've seen folks older and with a larger vessel still be able to dock with precision.
