40W solar panel on sale again. $99

Canadian Tire. This is the lowest price I've seen. Sometimes on sale for $129.99, sometimes $99.99.
Do I buy a second one or not?

I've just started looking for some replacement ones to replace some damaged ones but from my initial research that doesn't seem to be a great deal.

Also the type CT sells may not be the best type for output.

Given that I'm not likely to be doing much, if any, boon docking this year, I'm going hold off. I've got one 40W panel and I've got my Honda 1000 genny.

Knowing next to nothing about solar panels, but reading the FAQ section on the Canadian Tire website, I've learned a little, but not enough to make a decision. A couple of questions. These panels are designed to recharge 12v batteries. Would they also work with 2 6v batteries, which we have ordered with our new 17a?

And would we need an exterior 12v plug to connect them, or could they be connected by the exterior 120 AC plug?

Seems like a good deal, if we could use them while dry camping, or in winter to keep the batteries charged.

If you get a 7 pin connecter plug you can plug directly into your pig tail at the front of the trailer. Park in the shade and put your panel in the sun. Good for 2 x 6v batteries as well as 12v batteries.

I just have the one 40w panel and have yet to try it out. My plan was to use it to supplement my 1000w generator ( so I wouldn't have to run it as often ).
I would think you would need two 40w panels if you don't have a genset.

A better deal would be getting an RV solar kit from these guys:

Solar & Wind Products

We were doing the research to find the best way of installing our aging (but still totally functional) solar panels on our 17B when we came across them and chose to buy a whole new setup, with a much better shape for installing on top of our trailer that our old set.

...Yes, a "trailer pickup and first impressions" thread started by us is long overdue, but still in the plan

I think that's the bottom line.

I bought my first solar cell in the late 80's for a stunningly high price for a few watts. The price has steadily fallen and I've owned several since then. I'm no expert but I do believe that a person could do much better else where.

I'd suggest perusing ebay for a start and follow-up looking at ads for solar places near you if you don't buy online. I've seen 100 watts for plus or minus $150 so 40 watts for $99 doesn't seem like a great deal.

I have dual 6 volt batteries and have a new panel with 120 watts. It is still going through some testing and more use but I am a bit worried that it is enough wattage. The big issue is getting my batteries full, any panel will put a charge back into the battery, the issue is how much charge and how long will it take.

If ETI is an indicator, did they not just increase the size the panel they are using up to 160 watt?

Actually I believe it was the manufacturer who changed their model and offered the bigger one for the same price, which ETI took and passed the benefit along to the consumer.

Hi: cpaharley2008... I ordered the 95 watt solar option and got the 160 watt panel instead. All I wanted it for was to keep the battery charged at home without having to plug in the trailer. Haven't got home to try it yet, but now I'm looking for a good, not to big inverter so I can use my electric razor while "Cracker Barrel camping". Alf

Good excuse to grow a beard while you are camping, Alf. Glad you are having a wonderful "trip of a lifetime" so to speak.
