5lb Propane Tank

I know that this discussion is about using a 5 lb refillable tank, instead of the wasteful 1 lb ones, which is a good idea.

However, reading through the thread, I am even more convinced on how good of an idea the Low Pressure Quick Connect is.

On that very rare occasion I want to use propane more than 40' from the trailer, I I just use a 20 lb off the trailer. Since going with the LPQC I have done that twice.

That used to be my view also. But we cover a lot of ground travelling and taking firewood with us has become far too onerous crossing multiple borders. So my huge stack of nice dry cedar kindling doesn't get used up. Switched from wood burning to natural gas fireplace in my house also.

We have the propane fireplace in the house and a fire ring in the lower part of the back yard. The one in the house gets more work. Before I got the 11 pounder, I used to disconnect the trailer tank and use it on the campfire. It works ok but takes a little longer to remove the cover unhook the tank etc and hook up if you want the fire somewhat remote from the trailer. We had the quick connect on the 19 and have it on the 21 I have used it after taking the regulator off. I’m real happy with the 11 Pounder but they are pricey. Ammortized out over say ten years against the little green bottles, it ain’t bad. We had a guy in Cedar Rapids who had a hot air balloon, he was filling his big balloon tanks off a thousand gallon bulk tank at his house, boom, burned a good portion of the house and all of his garage. Didn’t save much there.

I have been using a 1 gallon (5 lb tank) for my grill for a year or so and, other than the initial purchase price, love it. I do feel guilty asking to have it refilled if it is the only tank - I suspect they waste as much propane hooking it up as they put in it, but other than that, I much prefer it to the disposable tanks.

I use a 1 gallon/5lb tank like others have said. And I got it primarily as a back up plan. If I run the main tanks out, I can plug this little one in and get through the night (heat) or dinner (stove/grill).

But it wasn't inexpensive. I looked all over locally and found none. Eventually bought it off Amazon for $47 US.

I've had a 5 lb and replaced it eventually with a 10 lb.
Just have to swallow the initial price.

I know what you're saying Ron but the only time we do sitting around the campfire camping is when we're camping with friends on our beautiful Vancouver Island. We all fill a tote or two of wood and bring it along or salvage driftwood off the beach. When we get off the island and are as you said "covering a lot of ground traveling" we generally don't have time for campfires. We're just so busy sightseeing and exploring the area, that when we come back to the trailer we're just too pooped setup a fire (wood or propane).

The more I thought about it, the more I began to doubt my aging memory.

Turns out I own a "pancake", 11 pound tank. Use these search terms in Google to see the squat tank. Looks like the nominal price is around 60 USD.

Lowes has a 4.25 lb Worthington brand propane tank on their website for $47.83 USD
It has the flat bottom, so doesn't fall over.
I used some other discount and got it delivered to the local store for around $40.

It fills just like the regular 20 pounders.

I have that one. The bottom is actually domed upward. I have used it primarily on the Outland Firebowl when I want to place it further away from the trailer than the qc hose allows. Works fine for that purpose, but it does drain pretty quick. The thing I like about it the most is that it's easy to carry.
