Rick, as an alternative, if you don't want to do any cutting/removal/modifications, you could use a folding step platform instead. We have a Stromberg Carlson with adjustable height. Very sturdy and stable too, since it sits on the ground. We find the double step mounted to the trailer results in a bottom step that is too low to the ground.
