Are Escapes numbered?

Does anyone know if we can tell which Escape we have and particularly which 19'? Or how many 19's have been made to date? I know there are more than 500 Escapes but I wonder if we each can see on ours which one it is. There were less than 500 when ours was built, I believe, but that is all I know, that we are in the first 500.

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

When we picked our 19 up at the factory, I asked if Reace could tell which number Escape it was, and he looked at the serial number and told us it was the 516th Escape ever made. I think he was looking at the first three digits. This number is out of all Escapes made, not just 19s.

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

Do you mean the VIN? The last 3 digits of ours could be it but not the first 3. Ours was picked up about first of August and the last 3 are 446. Tammy told me that they would be at 500 about November, I think, so that makes sense. (We saw about a new one up there but never having towed before, we thought getting ours from right near home was definitely the way to go, when it came up. And we are in the first 500 which I like.)

Just wish I knew which 19' it is. I am sure they do. Will have to ask, I guess. Some day these first ones we all have will be valuable antiques!! No telling what Tammy and Reace will be making 20 years from now.

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

Cathy, I looked at the serial number inside the closet of our 19, and the 516 is the last three digits, not the first three. --Liz

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

Thank you, Liz. We went over today but I just saw your note so didn't look in the closet. No matter, I have photos of everything!!! and the VIN is in there and that is where our number 446 came from, yes, last 3 digits. Thanks.

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

I believe the VIN numbering system must have started later in Escape history. If I do the math, my 2009 19 is 300, it would mean 300 units in the first eight years and 216 the past three years. Certainly possible, but can more users provide their numbers to shed some light.

Who has the lowest number?

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

Paul, when they first started, they were only making a few. They have stepped up production quite a bit lately. So they reached the 500th unit a few months ago and it was the schedule you describe. Remember, they started with one, then a handful and finally moved to a bigger place and could make quite a few more at once. And they were building business.

All of their units would have to have a VIN. I take it is called the serial number when built because it becomes a VIN when you register it with a motor vehicle dept. Ours says "serial number" in the closet, too, but it's our VIN.

There is also a product number which does not have nearly as many digits.

How Low Can You Go?

With production starting in 2002 and Thane having the lowest number so far, it does appear that the numbering system started with inception. Can anyone beat Thane's 85?

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

Reace told us that #1 no longer exists. By the gleam in his eye, I suspect there is a story there. --Liz

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

I remember Tammy telling the story of the first one. She said that Reace took it to a trade show and the door was bungee-corded shut! Come a long way.

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

And I think we were at that trade show!!

I remember first talking to Reace many many years ago--and we had our small Boler--many upgrades to it done by Reace...and eventually got a 17B!!

Oh, my, Anna-Marie! You were at that trade show about ten years ago! You must know all about the history and lots more. You will have to enlighten us.

I was thinking the first one was cannibalized for a later brand new mold maybe?

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

Would the VIN number not have something to do with the inspections for certification rather than a count from one company specifically ?

Re: Are Escapes numbered?

When I picked up my Escape, Reace showed me the last three digits of the VIN, and told me these digits were the counters for the manufacturing sequence. I was interested in the serial number aspect as I had never seen an Escape before.

We have a 2004 17A which is number 20. #2 was at the rally in Osoyoos!
