Best temporary or international phone to use while in Canada

now that we are retired we use no contract cell phones that do not work in Canada. Does anyone know of a phone we can use temporarily while we are traveling in Canada for one month Without having to sign up on a contract? Hoping to find something not too expensive.

Do you have an unlocked phone? Is it a phone or just a sim card that you'll need?

One option might be to buy a "pay for the time" phone while in Canada. In the States, both Fred Meyer and Walmart offers them. I have never read their contracts so am not familiar with the particulars. I think many people traveling through Mexico get a Mexican phone ... hopefully other who know will chime in. I can get a Canadian extension on my US Verizon plan. In the past it had very small gig allotment for data. Just recently Verizon is offering included Canada and Mexico on their new plans. Be careful as they like to be dishonest (forgetting the whole story) about their offerings. Read and try to understand their contracts.

Times have changed. We used to get pay as you go phones or sim cards in foreign countries but now our provider has various international options which are much more convenient because we can keep our home number.

We have a 7-Eleven pay as you go plan on another phone. It's reasonable and there are options. But as Tom says, to get the best plan is going to take some work reading the small print in the plans. They don't make it easy to compare plans.

check out websites for ATT (GoPhone) and MetroPCS (TMobile) no contract month to month phones ..they call from USA to Canada and perhaps they work the other direction too .
