Birds in a/c

I have a low-profile Dometic a/c unit on the roof of my 17B. I noticed recently (as it is getting colder) that small birds are entering the unit through the a/c vent holes. I had covered the unit with a tarp, but reconsidered as I want to leave here in January and would not be able to get the tarp off in the snow and ice.

Has anyone else had this problem? And, what damage can the little critters cause? How did you deal with it?

One can buy AC covers to fit.

Adco has a size 16 that may/may not fit properly.

It maybe too late if a nest has been built, you may need to take them south with you in January...

Living in the country, we have a continual challenge with roosting birds, usually English Sparrows. I do not like the mess they leave behind in roosting areas and especially where there is an air intake of any kind. Their droppings are a bit on the "corrosive" side too, making cleanup a bigger chore than it should be. I would look for a cover that would cinch down tight enough that it can stay on when under tow. Like some boat covers. That way, even if snow and ice are present when you take off snow or ice will be gone when you get far enough south. However, once at your destination, you'd have to figure out how to remove the cover if you want to use the air conditioner. Lots of camp hosts or park maintenance personnel have a step ladder around you might borrow for a few minutes. Just my $.02 (American)

Hi: sharonm... A little bird told me that one in the A/C is worth many in the bushes.
I was advised against covering our house A/C for this very reason. Alf

A month or so ago we had little birds hopping around the A/C unit and in and out the little holes. I ran the air conditioner for about 5 or 10 minutes. I covered the unit with an old sheet and cinched it around the bottom of the a/c unit with a Thule strap. We left it like that for a few weeks. Took it off when we had a weekend trip in the middle of Oct and have not had any problems since.

The gulls like to perch on them.

Around here, the only things that deter gulls are
are live red-tailed hawks!
