Border crossing with animals

Anybody have experience crossing US / CAN border with dogs?

All her vaccinations will be up to date. Any paper I need from the vet or other considerations?

Re: Border crossing with animals

Are you asking me? I brought documentation from my vet for Wolf showing his vaccines and when they were given and when the next ones are due; along with the manufacturer, serial number, lot expiration date and virus type for the rabies vaccine.
The documentation included species, breed, gender, weight and color. My vet included is information along with Wolf's picture. Crossing into Canada at a major crossing I was asked for the information. One time I crossed and nothing was said. I checked the official site for the information needed. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal/dogs.htm The aforementioned website was found after sorting throuh a lot of BBS. Hope it helps. It was much easier to get the info from the Canadian website than the American one, I'm sorry to say.
Good luck.

Glenn, all you need to get your dog into the US is proof of recent rabies shots, no other vaccinations required. I have never heard of anyone being checked though, we were asked once if it was up to date and said "yes" and were on our way. I googled for the info just a short while ago and came up with what was required quite easily.

Glenn,
I agree with Jim. Jenny's sister lives in the Montreal area so we have been back and forth many times. We have never been asked for Gracie's papers going into Canada, but they always check the rabies cert on return to the US, so just make sure you have it with you and it's up to date. Ian

I think it is interesting that as an American coming back into the U.S., I was never asked re: rabies. Maybe it was because his tags jingled!

Re: Border crossing with animals

I've just brought vet's copy of proof of current vaccinations for my greyhound, (especially need to include rabies) but I've never been asked going into canada or the states.

The rules are constantly changing. It's best to be prepared for the worst and have everything necessary, than to need to kennel your animal someplace because you can't make the crossing with him/her/it. Better to have the paperwork and not need it, than... you know ....

Re: Border crossing with animals

For sure, we always take the record from the vets with the rabies shot dates on it. They don't require vaccinations, which is good because many people choose to only do the initial ones, just like with us humans.

Re: Border crossing with animals

I've taken my dog across many times - and never had an issue. I had my vet print his vaccination records and I take them with me (periodically I'm asked for them - perhaps 1 in 4 trips - going either way).

What I am asked is whether or not I have any dog food. Can't take that across. I accidently had some the last time, told the border patrol, and they looked to make sure it didn't have any lamb in it. It didn't have lamb so they let it go.

Re: Border crossing with animals

That is interesting about the dog food Dirk, did they say why no lamb products?

We raw feed. so all the dog food we bring will be in the freezer, but have on occasion used Orijen, a grainless dog food.
