Wow, that's scary. Glad they're not injured Glenn. In reading more about the lunchbox type butane cookers, it appears many other people weren't so lucky.

It looks like one cause is using a pot or pan that's too wide on the stove. It can cause the gas cartridge to overheat and explode.

Another issue appears to be that the cartridge may not be seated correctly in the stove, which can leak and cause a fire.

Based on what little I know of these type of cookers, I'd stay away from them.

Glenn, the main thing is that neither your daughter or son-in-law were injured , that is very good to hear.

Daughter reports that he keeps injecting "I almost died" into the conversation, any conversation.

After seeing those photos I'm glad to see no one was hurt. The outcome could have been disastrous.

Happy you reported they're uninjured, and I pray they are also & will remain well. Scary thing to have happen to you.

As far as future camping, I hope they learn only what is valuable from this lesson, lest they end up like the cat who sat down on a hot stove top. That cat will never sit down on a hot stove top again, but will also never sit down on a cold stove top, either (supposedly attributed to Mark Twain).

My wife, Leslie ( AKA OB ), keeps bugging me to take son-in-law camping so he can learn and they can borrow the trailer and RAV.
It ain't over 'til it's over.
What can happen?

I've searched the web to no avail.
Asking how to safely transport butane and propane 1lb. cylinders.
The problem is that the vehicle is an SUV and that temps are expected to reach 37 C ( 98F ). The inside of a locked car would be much higher.
I think the cylinder will vent at some temperature and I don't want my RAV4 to blow up.
Kids might just dump the full cylinders before heading home.
