The picture sort of reminds me of camping at a Walmart but paying for it.

We visited Yellowstone last year and avoided FB specifically because of the density .. all of the other CG have dump stations and have length restrictions so it's nice to not be in the Bus Jungle

I love the national parks, but its tough with a dog. She's allowed in the campground but that's it, not on any trails. But after every dog I see in national forest trails and state parks being off a leash as we are dutifully following the rules with our pup, I can see why the rules are what they are.

Totally agree that it's annoying when you are following the rules and others aren't. However, it's common misconception that dogs must be on leash in the US National Forests at least.
From http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...rdb5351574.pdf
"Do I have to keep my dog leashed? Many hikers enjoy taking their dogs along on the trail, whether for a day hike or backpacking. National forest guidelines require that dogs be on a six-foot leash at all times when in developed recreation areas and on interpretive trails. There are no leash requirements in the general forest areas."
Our house abuts National Forest land and some guy was arguing with me the other day about not having my dog on leash (he wasn't even close to the guy at any time). He didn't believe me when I said it was not required.
So go out there and enjoy your public lands leash-free if your dog is big enough to scare off the Coyotes and other critters in places where it is allowed. It probably won't be that way for much longer with increased usage and more restrictions.

I would hate to have my dog run into a rabid wild animal and not know it. That is why I keep her close to me and on a leash, I can steer her clear of a bad situation. Also I would not want to scare anyone as well, if she should run up to someone . She is a Golden and friendly, but she is large. Carl

try Harvest Hosts
If you are having a problem finding a campground, and you just need a single night, I would urge you to join Harvest Hosts. You pay a $40.00 annual fee, and in return you get a directory of wineries, orchards, farms, museums, etc. that will let you camp on their property for a night. Sometimes (like tonight) you are on a paved lot with security lights etc around. But we have also ended up on the banks of the Columbia river in the middle of an apple orchard and in the middle of a vineyard. The protocol is that you buy something small from your host, like a bottle of wine or some apples. In extreme cases, we bought a whole case of wine (but it was really good wine!) tonight we are staying at an orchard/vinyard/farmers market. We bought some salad and some pork chops from our host, along with a sandwich wrap which we will use on the long drive tomorrow.
full disclosure: If you join Harvest Hosts, and mention that Leon Webster referred you, we will get a whole extra month of membership. But would recommend them even if they didn't do that.

Harvest Hosts sounds good, Leon. Are there plenty of hosts in most areas? How about Canada?
I looked into another one similar mentioned here a couple years back, but they were not set up for Canadians, at least at that time.

Harvest Hosts does include Canada. In fact, there are 3 or 4 of them in the Calgary area. We have had a great time at some of the wineries in the Texas Hill Country, and we plan to use Harvest Hosts more often when out of state.

There are definitely more hosts in some areas than others. And, amazingly enough, I find the most interesting hosts to be wineries and orchards. some states (like my home state of N.D.) only have one or two, and some states may have none. but there are lots in CA, several in WA and OR.
We are currently on our Fall Fling. We have been on the road just over two weeks, heading from MN to Boston and now down the east coast. So far we have stayed at 3 Harvest Hosts this trip, and we will probably stay at a couple more before we get home.
