Campsites: it's only going to get worse

As boomers downsize their homes and buy RVs to escape the winter, campsites are getting harder to come by.

I know where there is one available. Hopefully I would get Site #1.

On a more serious note, I really do believe that governments both sides of the border need to look at adding more campsites. I would even be willing to pay a bit more than the average.

One other thing I had been thinking about, is if they let private owners set up in National, Provincial, or State parks. This way they could be certain to draw more people, as often setting up outside the park is not near as desirable, especially if it adds an hour or so each way onto the drive to where you would like to go for a day trip.

This makes it even more important to be able to boondock. The campsites without services aren't in as much demand as the ones with.

I assume you refer to campground sites without services. To me boondocking is camping out in the boondocks, far away from people. Though I have heard some call camping in a Walmart lot boondocking too.

For the most part, or should I say the time being, this is true, but it is becoming something that more people are moving towards these days. I know a few people that had monster RVs, and though still not down to the size of an Escape, they have less power requirements due to size and efficiency of devices, and are set up with lots of solar. Oh, and a backup gen set too.

I agree. Public-private partnership business models respecting the environment and with fair returns on investment should be explored. The parks belong to everyone and must be accessible.

I'm OK with 3P, if somebody can explain to me why government ( read, my tax dollars ) end up bailing out the private part when things don't go according to plan.

You absolutely have it whenever you want it!

I can actually provide water snd electric for two trailers. There is Campsite 1 and the "overflow" area.

Let's leave the politics for another day and enjoy this wonderful Washington Post presentation on the U.S. National Parks.

The biggest lesson I've learned since retiring in March of this year is that things change. I retired with plans for epic retirement trips one before the busy season and one right now. BUT cancer came calling two sisters - one of mine and one of Liz's. One survived and we buried one in June. All my travel plans for the early trip were changed. Right now, we are sitting lakeside at N'kMip hoping to head East tomorrow for the Kettle River area. But we are staying tuned to cell phone calls to see if our daughter goes into labour with her first child. THEN WE BOOT IT BACK HOME.

So reading Glenn's post tells me just what I need to be aware of. THINGS CHANGE and I need to adapt. Next year, we hope to have some epic road trips BUT you bet if campgrounds are booked up we will hit Recreational Sites (which I kind of like anyway) and adapt ourselves to changing realities.

I was thinking of this earlier today. Headed to the Rhode Island shore Monday for a weeks fishing, which I've done pretty much every fall for the last 8 or 10 years. Used to be you didn't need reservations, might be 3 or 4 other campers during the week in the loop I like, which is 30 or so sites.

Looked the other day at Reserveamerica and there are only 3 or 4 available. Give it a few more years and I'll have to commute.

Hopefully this problem will resolve itself over time. Supply should follow demand, and more campgrounds will be built. That should work on the commercial side, anyway. Both Canada and the U.S. have plenty of room for more campgrounds.

As for finding a campground in south Florida, I tried to reserve a spot in Myakka State Park near Sarasota for next February. The park is booked up! Yankees, I'm guessing, and well, Canadians.

Race you back. Our first grandchild is due Oct. 2. Wonder if you can camp in the Royal Columbian Hospital parking lot?

See. you coulda come camping on Labour Day.

Grandkids are great. I have 3 for now, 11, 9, and 4. Was camping with them last weekend. My youngest daughter 28 is contemplating reproducing soon.

I have often said this, but I relate the to rental tools. You check them out, abuse (like ice cream for breakfast), then send them in for repair. They loves their grandpa.

In the case of government campgrounds supply may follow demand but with a 10 to 20 year lag time. Also, the loudest people will be fighting to remove vehicles from public owned parks. The RV and Trailer owners and industry need to quietly get involved and push for more access to NP and NF lands, even though we are destroying the rainforest, melting all the glaciers and causing hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes.

Yup. Interesting that the RV industry is going gang-busters and the auto industry is working on green driverless cars. Not sure how that will fit. Will we plug our tow into the trailer for a charge?

Solar powered tow vehicles will be stuck at the bottom of all the hills waiting to get a recharge. The govt. will then build camping facilities at the bottoms of hills to serve the stuck vehicles.
