Captain's Lights

A lot of people seem to like the Captain's Lights and we are definitely considering them for our build sheet (19). We're looking for some general thoughts on what the benefits these bring, and thoughts about placement. I'm thinking two at the back and two at the front - is that overkill, just right, a waste of dough?

Thanks in advance...

I had 6 in my 21 and they were over kill. The new lights installed by Escape are very bright, so brightness is not an issue. I had one installed in the middle of the o/h shelf in my 19' and it points down and can be rotated. There are stock o/h in the bed (3) as well as 3 in the dinette area, so plenty of light.

Keep in mind this is on a 5.0TA. We use 2 at the bed for reading, unless we are using one of the Kindles.

Have 2 at the U dinette. Also use for reading when the other occupant is sleeping.

I added an overhead LED light under the cabinet centered on the table to avoid shadows, it gets used the most of the 6 lights at the table.

If you tie flies or crochet, or if you pick the lima beans out of mixed vegetables, you may want to pay special attention to task light placement.

In our 19 we have two in the front corners of the dinette and two on the passenger side corners of the rear bed which is the correct orientation for the heads to be in when sleeping. . Works great at these locations for us.

Though the light in our dinette is more than adequate for reading, we had two Captains lights installed so when I tie flies the light hits my vice from both sides over my shoulder. It wouldn't be bright enough to tie without them. I prefer to use one of the focused Captains lights for reading on the dinette seat. It is easier on the eyes. The two Captains lights that are standard at the head of the bed are great as well.

We have a 5.0TA, and have two captain's lights in the bed area and two above the dinette area. We use them frequently. Dan

Captains lights

Two at the head end of the bed are great and get used a lot. The stock LED lighting is more than enough for the rest of my needs.

I have two captain lights in the front dining area on my 19' escape. I have never used them. I have led lights; there are 3 leds in the front dining area, 3 leds in the back bedroom and one over the kitchen area. I rarely have more than 1 or 2 on of all the lights.

However, I do use my kindle for reading books so maybe if I was reading paper books I would use the captain lights more. Or if I was doing crafts that required more light.

I had two captain's lights at the head of my bed in my 21. I never use them. I removed one to get access to 12V power for a wifi repeater. I may put the light in the dining area, where it might be useful.

I also use an ebook reader, a Kobo, so that reduces my light requirement for bedtime reading. And I sleep with my head at the "foot" of the bed anyway.

We like the captains lights for ambient lighting, not necessarily for reading. We typically turn them toward the corners and it gives a nice soft lighting while we watch TV. The overhead lights under the cabinets are too harsh, and we only use them when we are cleaning or need a very bright light.

Ditto to that. We have the same in our 5.0 and the lighting is 'just right'. We use the lights in bed a lot: I can go to sleep and she keeps her's on without much problem.

We replaced the bulbs with these and like the warm white better.

We agree, The over head lights are too harsh.

Put two layers of parchment paper in those over head lights and see if that is any better. A pretty cheap fix. Takes 10 minutes and you may already have all the materials. If you don't like it, try theatrical filters ($$$) or go with different bulbs.
