Charcoal BBQ/Grill - does anyone have a favorite?
It's birthday time and I'm looking to buy my hubby a bbq/grill (using both languages so I don't offend anyone). He insists on using his mesquite charcoal or Santa Maria red oak rather than any kind of gas/propane. Does anyone have a favorite camping charcoal bbq/grill they can recommend?

Hi Jill, I remember meeting you at Folsom SRA last Spring. If y'all want the ability to cook indirect -- for low-and-slow cooks like pork shoulder or brisket -- the Weber Jumbo Joe works well. When we take it along, we put it in the pickup or in the 21's center aisle.

We've been using this Weber "Go Anywhere" since we picked up last September; it will go in the front box. Just got a propane one though for "convenience"....we'll see.

I agree. IMHO the best tiny charcoal grill made.

Good- part of my collection but the round shape of it inhibits it being compact. Used to carry it in a Rubbermaid bin but man it was bulky. The Go Anywhere I put inside a large "got my own bag" and it easily goes in the corner of the front box.

Another that uses a Smokey Joe. That said, if I were to need to replace it, I would spring for the charcoal Go Anywhere. Looked it over last week, looks a bit more storable then the Smokey.

Heck yes! I am a hard core bbq'r too and always travel with my red oak bag. I use a Smokey Joe, charcoal chimney and starter paper that fits nicely in a Sterlite plastic box along with my wire brush and igniter. There's even room inside for my #10 dutch oven, both to store and for cooking.

Well I'm impressed! We've stuck with the Go Anywhere propane version simply to avoid the charcoal mess, and I've never owned a Smokey Joe because it looked too awkward to tote around. However, the notion of fitting a dutch oven into it is kind of compelling.

I really liked this stainless steel Master Forge for $99 at Lowes. Then I found out how hard it is to clean barbequed grit off s/s. Pix on right is after a serious scrubbing.
Then I found out there's no way to quick connect my 20-pounders to it because the regulator/control only accepts them Coleman mini-tanks. They don't last too long. Ah, well... made this wood caddy to keep it all together in the truck.

You can get hose adapters with the same thread pattern as the Coleman mini bottles. It's not a quick adapt to your 20 pounder, but they work. Nice looking carrying box.

Santacruzer.... My hose is quick connect at both ends. Where did you get an adapter that converts quick connect to the (Coleman mini-tank) regulator in my picture? I've looked high and low in vain.

Myron,
Sorry, I didn't make that very clear. I read over the part where you wanted the quick-connect, which I presume is the factory install from ETI. I don't think you can get that kind of connector. The quick-connect is low pressure, and goes through the same regulator as your inside appliances, whereas the mini-bottles and the propane coming directly out of the 20 pound tanks are higher pressure. The hose that I was describing, and which GBAGLO pictured, is high pressure. Sorry if I confused matters!
That grill may be tough to clean, but is still good-looking.

My quick connect comes out after the 20 pound tank ETI regulator. I did this mod myself. My hose needs some way to mate with the grill regulator that normally connects to the Coleman bottles. So you're saying this is not possible?

I have a Mr Buddy propane heater in my deer stand,
The heater is designed for the one pound propane cylinders.
Mr buddy also sells a propane hose that goes from a 20 lb
propane tank to the heater. I use the same hose with my small gas grill
No regulator on the 20 lb tank just a regulator at the appliance.

Ditto that Steve; have a Weber Q I've been using 5+ yrs. with same setup. Disconnect propane from 30lb tank and screw 15' hose into tank and other end onto Weber; Weber grill setup on tailgate of F250 or table depending on how may adult beverages consumed . Bam, good to go. No quick connect; no mods and can still use 1lb. canister if I want to, but why would I want to?

I installed the quick connect on the tongue so I could make a quick connection. Looking like I outsmarted myself.
