Should be interesting - I haven't been in a vehicle in snow since I was a kid and I wasn't driving!
Hi TDF,
sounds like you are set, good luck and safe travels. I will be making the same trip shortly. You may want to do a dry run on your tire chain install just in case, but I am hoping you will not need them

I tried the chains but I'm sure that it will be different putting them on in snow and freezing than the 70+ weather here.

I don't plan to EVER do this again but I guess I could use the chains for the mud we have in east Texas.

LoL, Yea I'm with you on that. As far as your alt. route 199/101/20 to I-5 that is the reroute we take when the I-5 looks bad. Really surprised with those pics you posted of the 199 ? I personal have never seen snow on it. Could take the 38 to the 101 but yea it will add time and more winding roads or just wait it out on the I-5.They do plow the I-5 more often, it's those 100's of semis barreling down the Siskiyous that I dont care for. Which ever route you chose just take your time and you should do well.

You may see my truck parked in the chainup area waiting for the plows on the road cam

I think I'll try I5 unless it gets worse. Just keep a good following distance and go with the pack.

richardr, We stayed at the Hampton Inn by Hilton that's on LIckman Road, just a quarter mile so past the turn off to ETI. Not as much noise from the Highway. And it costs us $89.11 USD per night. Better than the Escape Trailer rate we were quoted from the Best Western.

The hotel had a free breakfast, but I'm not a big fan of what they serve. We found a great place for breakfast/lunch at Cookies Grill. Really good food at a reasonable price, where working folks eat.

Like Losangeles says, ask for a room away from the train tracks. Truly nice and quiet.

tdf-texas, that's the route we always take. Easy drive, even easier if you have a GPS in your 4x4. Google Maps sometimes gets confused with all the turns , and then doesn't work once you cross the border unless you have a roaming plan for your phone.

Here's a link to the Siskiyou Pass Road Cam.

Have a great trip up, and an exciting adventure back to Texas!

Have a safe trip! We will be heading from the Houston area also but probably won't be until June. Good thing for me as I don't have a 4x4 or snow chains. Let us know how it goes.

I paid $81 + taxes CAD at the Best Western by booking ahead. Not a bad place at all. Decent free breakfast.

Jim, the Escape Trailer rate we were quoted by Best Western was somewhere around $105 USD, using .75 for the exchange rate. We booked ahead as well, and called the hotel directly.

Glad you got such a good rate. When we get our trailer in April, I'll tell them we want the Jim Bennett rate.

It looks like 101 has snow as well. This is one crazy winter! Oh, and only two rock slides!

Used Expedia and was quoted $72.32 a night. Add $10.85 taxes and fees for a total of $83.17 USD.

I booked through Expedia to use travel points. I did just try for the night of Jan 26 as I do need a room then. All booked up. The night before is open at $99 CAD.

I'd best be looking for a room soon, it seems.

Oh man, heading for Baja in about 10 days. Thought all I had to do is dig out the mountain of frozen snow blocking the trailer and I'd be free to go.

Those highway conditions don't look all that good. Hope they clear up in the next couple of weeks.

We stayed at the Travel Lodge on west Yale rd, when we stayed in Chilliwack last October. The Bestwestern was booked up. Nice rooms , quite, about 5 min. Or so to Escape. And there is an IHOP attached to it.

It looks like we are in the same situation, as though there doesn't seem to be any big events happening in Chilliwack at the time, there are only a couple places with rooms left, including the Travelodge for $67 CAD. 4 minutes to Escape is not so bad.

I had been thinking the Best Western because they are pet friendly, but seeing this is a two day driving trip for the most part, we likely won't take Jasper.

I was very pleased with Best Western's pet friendly set up. Wooden floors, exit right out the door, plenty of walking space, a lot nicer than Motel 6 we experienced elsewhere on our pickup trip.
