Clean RVing

HI Everyone,
I am sure that everyone on this site shares a passion for the great outdoors and has wanderlust to visit interesting and wonderful places all over North America in our RV’s. Unfortunately, our choice to burn carbon fuels to travel helps to degrade the very places we cherish via carbon emissions and the resultant global warming. The evidence is undeniable but if you want an example immediately relevant to this crew, ask anyone who is following the rapid demise of the Glacier National Park glaciers. No More Glaciers in Glacier National Park by 2020?.
Now assuming we are not going to simply give up the RV lifestyle, what can we do? We have elected to purchase carbon offsets to compensate for our burning of carbon fuel. Briefly, carbon offsets are projects around the world such as reforestation in the rainforest to grow trees that will capture carbon dioxide we have generated. Our personal goal is to have our RV activities be “carbon neutral”, that is, we fund enough projects to capture the amount of CO2 we generate with our RV activities, about 4 tons per year in our case. Our cost for this is just $60. I would invite others on this site to do the same. Here are two websites that will help you take this action if you choose.

Carbon Footprint Ltd - Carbon Offsets, Offsetting, Neutrality and PAS 2060
Carbon Offset Program-Frequently Asked Questions | The Nature Conservancy

Thanks for reading.

We are not going to turn this thread in to a political stage. Okay?

I agree with rbryan4. And whether one agrees or not, isn't it like letting the camel's nose under the tent with regard to solicitation for one's favorite charity?

No camels to be found in USA or Canada. Horses in front of the Escape! Wouldn't that be a sight? (You only have to bring a pooper scooper

That is one of my 99-year-old dad's expressions and I've always loved the imagery of it.

Well they were in Quartzsite, AZ in the 1850's. An experiment that didn't work, but the Hi Jolly Monument is an interesting visit when looking for things to do during a long winter in the desert.

Hi Karen,

You're right. I should have added something about there are many other ways to offset carbon emissions besides the two orgainizations I listed. Also don't want it to be seen as a political issue--way bigger than that.

No camels allowed in my tent BTW

It's not just the charity per se. It's the subject matter itself. And that will be my last post on this thread.

I think there are enough environmental forums out there if anyone wants to continue this discussion.

I think the topic is relevant to RVing ( might want to discuss towing with an electric vehicle too ). I don't see it as political unless you deny climate change.
In the future, you may not be able to buy a tow vehicle that will tow a trailer. If that isn't relevant, I don't know what is.

Don't get me going on carbon taxes and carbon offsets. If I said what I think of them I'd be banned for life.

I have wondered, if people travel by car and trailer instead of plane, what the difference is on energy consumption. If there were a plane-load of people in the average-sized plane used in NA, how much energy does the plane use instead of those people going by TV and trailer, or just going by car.

I suppose the plane is less, but the trip is shorter and completely different. Nothing is seen with the plane.

A big percentage of RV owners simply go from Point A to Point B and stay there, and back again. They do not travel as many of us do.

Yes, an electric TV occurred to me but those are too small for our Escapes.

I'd have more to offer if the title was Cleaning RV instead of Clean RVing
