That it does, Rbryan, that it does. Brian... well next week we plan to escape to where I just heard current weather reports are in the high 90's and I won't yet have my air conditioning. Planning my back-up solution, though: fan sitting on countertop behind block of ice.

I like it! Thinking I will be in my workshop this afternoon modifying a spare cooler. Jim I think you just saved me many hundreds of dollars.

A commercial version of the red neck air conditioner that I posted earlier.... It's all good.

Mine lasted about 4 hours before the ice melted, long enough to take a nap.

Ouch. I am making a really really big block of ice, as we speak. Hope to report it lasts a couple days longer than that.

Mine was bagged ice, I wonder if one can use dry ice? that lasts awhile. Not sure if the off gas is potent, though. In addition the cooler that came with it was not that insulated, maybe if you used a Yeti or some other super insulated cooler, you will get several days of use.

It's the WallyW, "Hercules Heavy duty Ice Chest," and the styro-walls are 1½ inches thick... so, much more than a $5 day-cooler throw-away. Almost bought a WallyWorld $15-dollar hard plastic cooler but, since this is mainly all an experiment my conservative side is more willing to cut holes in a throw-away Hercules. The fan can always find use. The PVC, I had. Hadn't thought of using dry ice but sounds like an option. Big ice blocks should, by my reckoning, last a long time. Only issue with them is the heavy lifting.

Who knows? If the thing proves functional it just might relieve the pressure to spend the big a/c bucks just for them few days when we might really be sorry we didn't have one.

It's carbon dioxide. Not toxic, but I wouldn't want to fill a small enclosed space with it. A small cooler full of dry ice will turn into gas of about the same volume as the air in the trailer.

2X on not using dry ice. I once managed to fill an orchestra pit with enough CO2 using a dry ice fogger to put out a candle sitting on a table. This was with less than 20 lbs of dry ice filling a volume many times the size of the interior of a trailer!

Wow that's a caution! No dry ice for me. Better to (cough) endure the slings and arrows of humidity than to venture into forbidden, dry chemical lands.

Cooler instead of A/C

Our son uses a Swampy.net cooler in his VW bus in Phoenix daily. Says it is much better than the modified coolers and he just uses water at over 100* F. It is more expensive than styrofoam coolers but works so much better that others have bought one after they see his working so well.

The operative word is "Phoenix". Evaporative cooling (swamp coolers) work quite well in low humidity areas. They have them all over the Utah area where I grew up. Not a one down here in South Texas. Far too humid for them to work effectively.

swamp coolers

Normally we have monsoon here in Tucson and a good swamp cooler does work. A house that was my son's, now daughter,s rental property does just fine without air and our son uses his cooler in the VW when he goes to CA. The web site lists the different units based on part of the country to be used. The old VW people try everything to keep the vehicles up to date as they can.
