F150
Been watching all these truck ads on the TV lately. It appears that all have "best in class" towing or fuel economy or something else.
But the Ford F150 appears to be the best truck to tow a trailer with, since the ads depict it towing bulky, largely hollow items, like a septic tank, or pipes, or wire spools ( with no wire on them ).
Fibreglass trailer is certainly bulky and hollow.

Not shopping. Just watching too much TV.

I've been watching Robert's thread about towing his 19' with a new Ford F-150 w/ ecoboost. My truck is a 2014 (purchased April 16, 2014) the mileage I get is not as good (non-towing) as Robert is getting. But, I really, really like the truck. It's comfortable, tows Ten Forward great (not a huge drop in mileage between towing and non-towing). But remember, they come with a mortgage!

Same as Robert, the 3.7 w/ ecboost. But I don't have the aluminum body and it's a year older (although purchased brand new... 3 miles on the odometer).

You mean the 2.7 eco boost, correct?

There is a 2.7 or a 3.5 motor.

No... I'm right now looking at the window sticker. 3.5L Ecoboost V6 Engine, Electric 6-Speed Auto W/Tow Mod. I guess it's different than Robert's after all. Guess that explains the MPG difference.
Don't care, still love the truck.

My F150 is a 2012 with the 3.5 EcoBoost. On the highway, not towing, it will do 21 mpg. Towing my Scamp 19, it dropped to 15+. I don't know how it will do with the 5.0TA because it is a few hundred pounds heavier than the Scamp, but I don't really care. If my towing price goes up, that's just the cost of doing what I want to do.
While I think aluminum is a great way to increase gas mileage, I'm not sure about it yet. It's strength does not worry me (it should be as tough as steel)and the rust resistance is a benefit. What I am waiting to see if the cost of collision insurance increases substantially. Body work on aluminum is not the same as body work on steel, not all body shops are currently capable of doing a good job with aluminum, and painting bare aluminum is not the same as painting steel. Unless prepared properly, paint does not "stick" to aluminum as well as it does to steel. But anyone buying a new truck had better get used to the idea of aluminum. It is my understanding that GM is following Ford's lead and switching to all aluminum bodies. For those who didn't know, the hoods on the Ford F series have been aluminum for several years.

Donna, I believe your motor will not have to work as hard as Robert's. Will probably last a little longer if used a lot for towing.

Our F150 Egoboost is like Donna's, except it's a 2013 and we have a cap on the bed. We get 20-22 mpg when we're not towing our Casita. It drops when we tow to 16-17, which is what our 1998 F150 (V6) got on a good day, without the Casita tagging along behind. (We didn't call it the Big Blue Gas Hawg for nothing.)
Of course I wonder what the hit will be on the Egoboost's mpg when we're towing a 21' Escape instead of the Casita, but, like Donna - we love this truck. Our dog's kennel rides behind the driver's seat and she is travels much better there. The integrated tow package exceeds our expectations and the little back up camera is handy... and the gas mileage not-towing is only a couple mpg below what we got with a 4.0L Ranger.
We drove the Big Blue Gas Hawg for 15 years. We expect the kinks will be worked through on the aluminum F150s long before we're ready to upgrade again.

Perhaps Jim. But my trailer is heavier than Robert's and I use my truck as a daily commuter. Doesn't matter, it is what it is and I like it.

Just to make you folks feel better my 2012 3.5 EB gets 18 highway without trailer, 13ish towing the TA. Guess the 8' bed, HD payload pkg, and 4x4 make a pretty good dent in the mileage. Good to know they are finally coming out with truck/engine combos that get decent mileage. My 06 GMC 4x4 got 10 towing and 15 highway without.
