License Plate Mod for the 1UPUSA bike Rack

So after all the great things said about the 1UPUSA rack, I ordered a Super Duty as I only have one bike and what the hell, beefier is better, right? Anyway they just revamped their web site and now have a lighted license plate holder. A bit pricey but figured my bike would block the pate when I used it on my truck as well as my trailer. So the plate holder was better than expected. It has red LEDs for turn signals and brakes as well as a white set for lighting the plate. So how to power it?

I ended up getting a 4-way connector that I attached to the bumper, a grommet through the shell and then tied into the existing wires under the bed. While I was under there I fixed the floating frame members that were discussed elsewhere on this forum.

1st photo, attach bed frame to wall piece.
2nd photo, tap and die threaded hole to receive SS 10 x 20 screws to mount plug
3rd photo, grommet installed
4th photo, I used epoxy to bond the grommet to the shell.

Edit: I don't know how to make my photos appear upright to to add captions to each photo. Sorry for the mess.

Question,
What is the issue with the bed rails? Do we all need to add "L" brackets and 2x4's?

On a '19 at least, the bed rails are only attached to the front framing. They are "carried" by the rear piece of plywood and fall about 1 1/2 inches shy of the rear framing. I sistered a 1x2 to the rail and used the L bracket shown to attach it to the rear framing.

And if you were the one that fixed my photos, Thanks!!

Looks great Arnie, I had not heard of their plate holder, they never had that when I got my rack 3 years ago. I don't think your PLATE will survive the weather very well.

Thanks! LOL! I didn't want to show my actual plate number for internet privacy reasons. Just being overly cautious I guess.

Thanks Steve. Penetrating the shell made me the most nervous. Looking inside I saw that ETI had epoxied their wires in place but all their shell penetrations end up in a fixture. Then I found the grommet in Lowe's "unusual parts" bin and realized I could bond that to the shell with Epoxy and the rest came easy.

I did a double take when I read your description of going through the "shell". I wouldn't have slept a wink the night before. You've more courage than I !

You drive around with it displayed in front of thousands of people on the freeways and byways. I curious what the web could do with that information?

They are just holes, like the hundreds Escape makes into the trailer. I have at least four projects on the list of mods to do that require little and big holes.
- Solar port on roof
- LP QC port on front
- Cable hatch on rear
- Exterior shower on passenger side
- and possibly an exterior hatch to access under a dinette seat.

Easy peasy.

Like i said, overly cautious. It's just a habit from my IT days of not putting anything personally identifiable on the web. But your right, its right there in traffic each time I go on a trip.

Jim, I'm looking forward to meeting you in Osoyoos in May and seeing all the mods to your new 5.0 TA. I love doing projects and can see that same quality in your work.

Could you post a link to the lighted license plate holder. I searched their web site but only found the unlighted one for $29. We are asking Escape to install the 4 pin recepticale for a lighted plate holder.

Here you go:

https://www.1up-usa.com/product/led-...-plate-holder/

Note it is only on their new site which has a dash in the URL. www.1up-usa.com

If you type 1upusa as all one word, it takes you to the old site.

Once you get your trailer could you post a picture? I would be interested to see how ETI did the install.

Thanks for the URL. I was on the old site. I'll try to remember to post a picture of the 4 pin connector ETI installs. The new trailer is still several months away.

Nathan,
Are you still carrying 4 bikes on your 1Up rack? How has the Escape hitch held up? I'm looking at options for carrying 4 bikes on our 5.0
