Unlocked; but shut. I had no idea that a bear could manipulate a door handle.

Good you didn't leave the keys in or he probably would have taken it for a Joy Ride.
Sorry, you're having to deal with that unexpected issue.
I went to CU in the 70s and a bear sighting in those areas I don't even recall. Has the bear population increased since then, or was this highly unusual to have a bear? I remember back then a trip to Jamestown was to go to the general store to get goodies that weren't readily available. Seems like the population was less than 50 in those days.

Time for a bear skin rug for in front of your fireplace?
A buddy in BC just had a bear get into his truck camper a month or so back, and it totally thrashed it.

Sorry to learn of the damage to your Toyota. Hope the insurance co. treats you right. We used rejected fruit and strawberry jam for bear bait in Ontario a few years ago, never thought of using car parts for bait. When I worked in Idaho, a bear entered my bosses trailer and opened the freezer looking for food. The 19 spoke and sent lead and smoke and seventeen inches of flame.

Which is a good reason to ignore Bear Aware's instructions to keep garbage ( food scraps ) in your garage, basement or freezer. Risk a fine, of course, but I don't have a choice.
