Yeah, it's up to Jeff or whomever. This is a young site and lots of good information is being shared. Five years from now, I hope you have all the pictures you need or want... instead of a "picture not found" message. Now back to your regularly scheduled topic... sorry for taking it OT.

Hi Jim

Nice picture, even if it isn't around in five years it was worth seeing today.

I think). It's even worse if someone is on dial up waiting for the picture to load.

But, I didn't come here to rant... I just come to read and hang out with my future comrades... as I have an Escape in my future!
Actually, you can slam me if you want, but there are many good reasons for inserting images. Unless my image hosting site goes down, the photo will always show. I am active in a few other photography and outdoor pursuit forums, and they all use linking, and have 10's of thousands of photos linked. FGRV site is the first one I have seen where you are not allowed to inset image links to hosting sites. Doing this also does not degrade the image quality, plus one does not have to process photos twice.

Besides, I want to maintain control over my own images. Copyright is a privilege.

But, you all are right. If Jeff does not want inserted links then I would gladly take my photos down.

Re: Furkid Escapees

Ok.. Everyone happens to right.. It's just one of those things that you can say "right" to all positions..

If Escape Forum hosts all the pictures: I eventually pay for bandwidth & disk space.. If it gets out of control we'll deal with it at that time.. we just had to increase the disk from the default of the software.. no biggie at this point..

I hope that everyone saves their pictures somewhere.. I personally like using Picassa on my personal site to save some disk space..

As for a post losing it's corresponding photo, I happen to be of the ilk, it's not the world coming to an end.. That's why I use a hosting company that is rather large and has all the facilities that do the server updates & automatic backups.. Hopefully we can recover from any major disaster..

I do have the administrator rights to change the look & feel and space requirements, but again I kind-of go from the ground up rather than top down approach of site building.. that's why I use the "site will guide us" approach..

Just so everyone knows my background was a system designer of software and eventually became a COO of transaction processor company in the Oil & Gas industry.. I'm sort-of retired and I just do this as a hobby to keep my hand in the "stuff"..

To make a long story even longer .. let's just see what the heck happens when the site's a year old and we have some data to use to make the appropriate site rules.. I do log all bandwidth, disk space, site hits, users, page counts and other stuff..

This is a very good point Jeff. I know lots of folks who have lost all their images in computer crashes. No matter your level of expertise with photography, you should have good safe backups of your photos (as well as any other important documents).

As I take photography quite serious (my gear would easily pay for my trailer :), I have taken to have a copy on my hard drive, a mirrored backup on external hard drives, as well as uploading full size (up to 12MB) JPG's to SmugMug, my image hosting site. I have way too many memories, and lots of time spent, to lose everything.

Re: Furkid Escapees

I didn't read any of the previous posts as criticism, nor was mine intended that way.

I don't mind a link, as long as I don't have to click on it to go to another site. I need an indication of why I should make that trip, sorta like a headline on a story.

Anyway, didn't Flicker ( ? ) advise users that their pix were going to disappear soon, just a few months ago. Might have been somebody else, but they were big. So, I just store mine on this here company computer and then the IT department gets a hold of it and wipes the drive for me without copying anything over. They've done that twice. It's not that big a deal, since I delete most of my own pictures, before they can mess me up.

And, if this is as close as we can get to a flame war, Jeff, with his deft hand, has nothing to worry about.

Re: Furkid Escapees

Me too. I wasn't slamming you Jim, honest. And yes, it's the free sites ya gotta watch out for. There are no guarantees they will continue to host pictures. AND, if the member is no longer around on the forum, there's no way to contact them to get some help getting the pictures back. But as Jeff said, no biggy and the world certainly won't end because some pictures don't display any longer. This is a nice site, and it will all work out in the end.

I have a good idea, let's all get together and have a beer (or whatever you prefer) around a campfire, no photos, just fun.

And to keep this thread on topic, we will bring our furfriends along too.

No, I wouldn't think they would mind. I would bet they would like a little warning though. Maybe a campsite nearby might be a better setting though.

I will echo most of that, and while most of the dialog was beyond me (I'm not a computer wizardess), I must say I do like pictures.

Re: Furkid Escapees

Pretty Kitties! My sister and b-i-l take their cat in their motorhome. At first he was a bit skittish, but now he does just fine. She also has a harness and leash for him as well as one of those pouch gizmos where he is carries like an infant in front of her. I admit when I first saw her carrying him like that I could hardly stop laughing.

Pretty kitties Anna-Marie.

I too have seen a few cats camping, usually tied out. I have seen a cat once that the people didn't bother to tie out, and it hung around. But, most folks I know with cats do leave them at home.
