I don't understand why one would need more than a local or state-resident-only card. Since the books are downloaded from the internet, they can be accessed and downloaded from any geographical point as long as wi-fi is available...the only restriction being (on library books) the available time for a book to be checked out from the library.

Is it that one has access to a greater number of books than are available from one library since one library simply cannot have every book on the market?

Many library systems don't offer eBooks yet, so if ur library system hasn't caught up with technology you'll need a card from one that does.

Definitely love using the library system and overdrive media to listen to books! And I load the printed versions of books to my Kindle, via Amazon. Usually, I download all before I hit the road. That way I am not waiting on poor wifi at the camp ground!

I love the series by Louise Penny, Cara Black, and Laurie L King. Sci-fi/Fantasy, I loved the Inheritance series by Paolini and Outlander series by Gabaldon. Of course, Game of Thrones series.

Yes, that's it-- Florida doesn't have a state-wide system as far as I know. Santa Rosa County doesn't have ebooks, and the Northwest Florida Regional Library had a slim collection the last time I checked. So I had to pay for a library card from a big city library in order to have a good selection of ebooks to choose from.

Okay, now I understand. I just assumed (and you know what that word means) that all libraries had digital books available. And me the Luddite...imagine that.

A local librarian told me that the publishers impose an artificial "lifetime" on the digital licenses, so that even when a library buys a license to an ebook it expires after so many years and they have to buy it again. I think his implication was that this scheme makes ebooks not so attractive to libraries, thus slowing any movement for a library to build up a large collection of ebooks.

You're not a Luddite, Karen. You mix old and new and see the value in both. Uh-oh! Common sense alert.

I'm a western, history buff and enjoy true stories.
>Any of Zane Grey's westerns are good reads
>Alive, story of the Andes survivors
>Into Thin Air and Touching the Void are two unforgettable books about mountain climbing
>Any of Edward Abbey's books
>A.B. Gutherie Jr, The Big Sky - story about mountain man survival
>Spirit of St. Louis - Charles Lindbergh book about his life and flying across the Atlantic
>I could never be so lucky again - Jimmy Doolittle's life and raid on Tokyo
>Stephen Ambrose - Undaunted Courage - story about exploring the west in very early 1800's, Nothing like it in the World - story of building the railroad
>Irving Stone - Men to Match my Mountains - History of settling the west...very good book about Pacific Northwest US history

That should keep you going

While not the typical Western author, Corman McCarthy has written a number of western themed novels. I first discovered him reading The Road, and found his Border Trilogy (All the Pretty Horses, The Crossing & Cities of the Plain) well worth reading. His No Country for Old Men was an Academy Award Best Picture, and another great read.

A couple of my other favorites include anything by the late Tony Hillerman, & James Doss.

Another pair of historic novel authors that I like are Kathleen O'Neal Gear & Michael Gear. They write accurate historic novels about the populating of North America.

Sticking with the SciFi theme I prefer, I highly recommend Robert Heinlein. Particularly "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress."

Kind of an allegory of the American Revolution.

Since you're in Alaska I recommend "Alaska," by James Michener in case you haven't already read it. Also the Jack London books.
Later when it is really dark and wet, read any of the Carl Hiaasen books, light reading, funny and they take place in Florida which is where you'll want to be in a few months.
On another forum I recommended "Empire of the Summer Moon" Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History. by S. C Gwynne. It is a graphic and historical account of Texas during the nineteenth century and covers the whole state. While reading it I understood why my mother once said that my Texas relatives never had a kind word to say about Comanche Indians.

When you are through with that book, read The Captured by Zesch. Non fiction account of white children kidnapped by Comanches. Seems they had plenty of good things to say about Comanche Indians.

From Alaska you can drive the highway to Dawson Creek, continue on to Grand Prairie and Edmonton. Pick up the Yellowhead Highway east to Manitoba, continue on and on through Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, catch the ferry to Newfoundland and read The Shipping News.

Just finished "The Rosie Project" by Graeme Simsion. Very enjoyable. Laugh out loud funny.
