Was out playing with the Swift Hitch after charging it this morning. It has a magnetic base that you attach to the tow vehicle.
Discovered that a significant area of the rear hatch on the RAV4 is made of plastic, not metal. Might have to try an adhesive magnet where I'd like to put it, or glue a chunk of metal plate to the tire cover.
I have all winter to play with it.

I'm sure the hatch structure is steel, but yes a bunch of the visible area is a plastic appearance panel, shaped around the spare. Not an uncommon situation, and generally not a problem... but Toyota didn't think of your camera!

  • Another application for 3M Command adhesives?
  • If you don't trust adhesives, and are willing to drill a couple of holes, could you bolt a mounting plate through the tire cover?
  • Is the camera's magnet strong enough that you could glue the chunk of metal plate to the inside of the tire cover; will it grip through the cover? The thicker the plate, the stronger the attraction, so by using something much thicker than typical automotive sheet metal you may be able to go with this hidden plate... depending on the thickness and composition of the tire cover.

Happy Birthday Glen from your neighbours Donna and Al. We were out at Escape the other day and Kim gave us your birthday present. We'll drop it off tomorrow.

I have to try it out first. I can position it on the hatch so I get a view from an angle. Other thought I had is to place it on the jack post on the trailer itself. Just not sure if my brain can cope with that reverse view.

Ah, yes, the guy who wanted a camera with a magnetic mount (no bracket installation) and radio/battery operation (no wiring)... what was I thinking?

Definitely glue on a plate, then.
