In many ways its like language. If you were born and raised speaking English, it would never occur to you that it's a rather difficult language.
I had to relearn as an adult, it was imperial thorough grade school for me. Like learning anything, giving it a fair chance is key to success. I think the biggest advantage, is not to the people that live through the conversion, but for all the future generations.

For me, I can still handle most measurements in imperial, other than temperature. I now find it easier to quickly convert to the metric equivalent.

I don't think we will get the many millions of stubborn Americans to keep up with the rest of the world though.

The key words are 'had to relearn'. You live in Canada, so it was a matter of necessity. I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to convert if we had to.

Problem is not "stubborn Americans" it's a stubborn government, which sets the standards.

And hard to fight that, eh?

Oh well, miles or kilometers, just so long as we get to our destination.

My TomTom GPS alerts me in metric to the next turn.
I've had it set that way for a couple years, but I still don't know what 160 meters is. Is it this upcoming light or the next one?

It is just under .2 kilometres. Watch your odometer, all you will be fine.

I find all my GPS devices, including my phone, alert me 400 metres ahead of a turn, unless it is one quick turn after the other.

I could go get the external dimensions of my heat pump in centimeters and mm...

I too remember in school learning all the metric measurements and being told that the US was well on its way to conversion. I even remember highway speed limit signs with both mph and kph on them. Then poof the future change vanished.

Working on imported and domestic cars got me used to metric wrench sizes. I used to be able to look at a nut and usually know what size it was in fractions of an inch or mm. But , with age, I've gotten less enamored with crawling around under things anymore and now let my dealer do most everything. That skill is fading fast, now I just close and have to grab a couple of them.

New York hasn't even got that far - we still use progressive numbers rather than miles to label our exits. Might be the only state left that is doing that...

Just got my paperwork today with the VIN -- last 3 digits 063. I guess that means it's number 1,063 they've made? Holy Cow! They've already made 63 trailers since they cranked out number 1000 to California just recently. Busy times at ETI.

Speaking of highway signs and thread drift, when Mary and I visit my brother in Arkansas, we make it a game to try to find a highway sign on a backroad without any bullet holes. (No offense to any Arkansas Escapees)

Just remember, its like learning a second language, just because you learn a new system it doesn't mean you no longer know the original system; you now know both.
