I keep foldable maps in a couple of small plastic bins. I keep my atlases and other large-format print stuff in one of the overhead compartments, but after reading this thread I might try something else, like a big plastic bin. That might work better. The 21 has plenty of storage for one person, though, so I don't really need that compartment for anything else.

As for everything else, here's another vote for ebooks. I have a Kobo ereader, but I've trained myself to read from my cellphone and it doesn't really bother me. So I can keep an entire library in my pocket, which is cool.

Regarding bird apps-- is there an app that will listen to a bird call via the cellphone's mic then identify the bird?

I keep hoping for one of those!

At this point such an app would still require a connection back to "the cloud" to do the signal processing, but it's doable; I'm surprised there isn't an app like this. It would be like Apple's Siri or Amazon's Echo, except for birds.

What made me first think of this was hearing an elaborate bird call in eastern New Mexico a couple of years ago. The call went on for at least couple of seconds without repeating. It seemed like a lot of effort to me, and I thought: "you know, guy, she's not worth all that. Bachelorhood isn't so bad..."

Peterson Birds of North America also has the bird calls.

We like paper books, but we also use E-Books, especially those we check out from our local library. The nice thing about getting books from the library in E-Form is that you never pay a late fee (they just disappear) and you can check out other books from your library even though you are 1000 miles away.

We store our paper books in the overhead cabinet above the rear table, and some reference books get stored below the dinette seat.

I bought the Audubon app a few years ago on sale at Christmas for like 75% off. It does a great job for when I have had need of identifying a bird. You fill in all the different parameters and it narrows the selection to just few birds, sometimes just one..

If you're looking for a bird ID app, the best one in my opinion is Merlin from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (associated with Cornell University). It is free, I believe.

If you're looking for real time bird sightings (on the hunt, so to speak), use EBird, also from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Merlin's Photo ID is great. Snap a shot, it tells you what the bird most likely is.
