Remember, all of you picking up through the awful weather, you need be in no hurry. Escape will still have your trailers there no matter when you arrive. And you especially do not need to be in a hurry bringing them out of there! Go slowly!!!

Appreciate it, gonna order a set of cable chains for our Escape 17 to have on hand.

In preparation for a trip to the northern Arizona mts. (5000-7000 ft. elevation), we just ordered a set of cable chains for our Escape 17, from Glacier Chain, in Anchorage, AK. (not a plug, just a suggestion based on our research).

Traveling through Portland is special. We came in last night over snow packed roads, chains required, at a max speed of 40 mph. Today we are in a winter ice storm warning. I don't think it could get worse but I also thought that after Siskiyou summit.

Sounds like you did not have the best timing. Hope things are good for the return trip, at least.

With a 4x4 truck, the roads are passable. Picking up the trailer Monday morning and the forecast is better for the way back. I would have waited for the trip up but the forecast for the week after next is worse. You have to pick a window of opportunity and make the best of it that you can. Or wait for spring.

Even with choosing the best window, winter travel through the mountains is always open to surprise, and usually a negative one.

For my trip back on Jan 28, I fully expect to hit snowy conditions crossing a few mountain passes, and will just have to see how it goes then.

Hopefully that forecast for better weather on your return trip holds out. I'd rather face slippery roads before picking up the trailer than after.

This graphic (which covers the Siskiyou Mountains) is updated as the Medford news station KDRV updates their weather forecast.

The I-5 Siskiyou Pass Elevation is 4,310'.

That forecast is interesting. I don't think I have heard of "snow showers". "Rain showers" and "snow flurries", yes. I do lead a seclusive life though.

How would it have been with 2 wheel drive F-150 and chains?

Glad you made it safely, so far! Hang in there!

A little slower. The 4x4 allowed me to continue without having to chain up and I could drive a little faster than vehicles with chains. Very few of the ones with chains were going faster than 30 mph and the ones that were driving faster, I usually caught up with when they had to pull over to retighten/replace their chains.

No worries, mate. We are in Chilliwack now and will pick up the trailer in the morning. It looks like the weather is in our favor for the way back.

That looks much better than a few days ago. Any temperature above freezing is great! I woke up yesterday in Portland with a 1/2" of ice covering my truck. It took a while with the defrost on high to get it melted enough on the windshield to continue the trip. As we drove through Washington, the ice on the front of the truck began to melt and start to break off in chunks hitting the windshield. The sound of the ice chunks hitting the glass was enough to cause us to pull over to finish the job of getting the ice off with our hands - I didn't want the windshield to break.

This has been a real interesting experience for us. For someone who hasn't drove in snow before, it's been a real eye opener for us.

Flying ice has busted more than one windshield, particularly off trucks. I believe most states now require vehicles to be free of snow and ice while on the roads.

so you didn't have to use chains?...the 4x4 allows one to bypass the requirement if posted to use them?...if so then having never used chains that 4x4 option sounds great and maybe safer.
