Is our Escape 21' a 2015 or 2016?

We picked up Escape 21' on January, 2016. The identification VIN plaque on the trailer says December, 2015. We have not seen the title yet as we are on the road. What actual year is our trailer? Is it when it is completely built and when we picked it up?

I would say you've got a 2015 if that's what the vin indicates. Probably was completed in Dec. Did they gave you the 2015 pricing.

Guess we should have waited until the trailer was built as a 2016. H-m-m, it wasn't available in 2015, had to wait until 2016 to pick up a 2015 trailer. We are disappointed about this, but it is what it is.

Our original pickup date was December 28 2014 and Tammy specifically told me it would be a 2015 trailer. We ended up with an earlier date in September so it is a 2014. I would be surprised if your title didn't say 2016.

Verry interestink!

I would bet it is likely a 2016. How many people are getting 2017 models built in 2016? Same with vehicles having a manufacturing date in one year, yet it is a model designed for the next.

In the end it really does not matter a lot, as there really was very little difference between the two years.

edit: or what Ross said.

I'm with Charlie. You could have picked up the trailer in 2015. The only thing that can start later is the warranty and that starts on the date you pickup the trailer or it's delivered.

Escape's model changes in December, historically. Anything made after November should be the next years model. Mine was made 12/2013- it was a 2014 model. Thus the op's should be a 2016 model. Now for the current batch, price will determine year.

OK, I decided to call Escape and they said that even though the mfg date was 2015, all the import documents and Bill of Sale say 2016. It only makes a difference if, or when, (horrid thought) we sell, knowing what year to advertise. Happy to clear this up! But food got thought for other buyers caught in the same situation.

Donna, they told us it wasn't ready until 2016 so we never questioned it.

Glad I'm not a betting person! I would have lost. Thanks for letting us know. Knowledge is power.

I misread the first information. I thought you said you couldn't pick it up until after the first of the year, not that the trailer wasn't finished until then.

What the placard says about manufacture date and what the VIN says about year may not be the same thing. Cars are routinely identified by a "model year" which the next one after the year in which they are actually made, and I believe that the VIN shows the model year, not the manufacture date.

If you read the actual 17-character VIN, you can pick out the 10th digit - just before the "C068" (which means made in Chilliwack by Escape Trailer Industries). The 10th character should be "F" for 2015, and "G" for 2016.

By the way, the last three digits plus 1000 is the serial number of your trailer - a count of how many Escapes were made up to that point. Lots more detail about the VIN can be found in the thread Escape sighting?, in post #41 and post #44... and in the Wikipedia page for Vehicle identification number.

All Escape VINs appear to be
2E9TF6A2cyC068nnn
where
c is a check digit
y is the year code
nnn is the sequence (serial) number

Originally our 21 was scheduled for production in Feb. 2015, however ETI accelerated their manufacturing and completed it in Dec. 2014. Per the paper work from ETI it is a 2015 model. I assume this is due to the original scheduled completion date.

Not really, it is the actual completion date not the scheduled one. See #8
