Just a couple of 5.0 quirks.

I'm not doubting that it has happened, just looking at everything that has to occur for an awning to open. I was expecting to see a strap that went around the awning, not the arms.
FYI if you already own a set of camco de flappers you can use the strap from them for each arm. The extra step of installing the straps will also provide a double check that all systems are locked.

Just out looking at the awning, it is attached to the trailer! Hard to put a strap around it. Guess that's why the arm straps..........duh!

Sounds like bungie balls may be a good alternative to using velcro straps to fasten the arms on the awning. They are simple to use and hold really well. I frequently use them for fastening items (paddles, etc) to the roof rack on my truck and have never had a failure. I have a dozen or so in a storage bin in my truck. I think I will try a couple out tonight to see how they work.

If you could image; We out in the middle of eastern Oregon during a strong storm with down burst winds. My wife was driving. She pulled over as quickly as possible along the two lane road we were on. I was fighting this flapping wreckage of an awning. With knife in hand, I cut down the length of fabric and unbolted the arms and roller. Then I had to lash the whole mess of over length parts in the 6' bed box and still allow the 5.0 to turn & tow.
We were lucky no damage was done to the new trailer. No one ever told me this could happen. That was 2012. One note: Two days had past since I had last used it on the "wet coast". No big deal now. Just want others to know. New members sign on every day.

Exactly. The straps just make it difficult for the awning to swing out while traveling if for some reason the latch was left undone.

Used bungies for years, work great

Could probably even use a shoe lace.

I've seen kayaks, and ladders both come off roof racks, and these items were attached by bungies.

Bungies don't cut it.

Secure loads with rope, and or cinch straps.
