Lock Recall

I just read on CasitaClub.com that FIC, the maker of our door locks has announced a recall. Here's the scoop. I'm also sending this info to Escape. FYI.

If would bet they only hear from a small percentage of those owners. Unless on forums like this, most will likely never even know of the issue, and others who have not seen the problem will likely not bother responding.

Thanks for the heads up

I just got off the phone with Kathy at Fastec since one of the key numbers previously posted matched mine. Fastec is sending me replacement parts so that I can change out the defective parts. Nice to know I do not have to trek to someplace for service. Thanks to all who caught this issue and researched it. My wife was certainly reticent to go camping until we resolved this issue.

Greggo. Thanks for the heads up. Just called Fastec and the experience was very pleasant and "No problem". They are also sending a prepaid envelope to get the old parts and the special tool which they will supply returned to them. Pretty neat service. Cheers

Thanks to you all who researched this information. Our 2012 17B key code does not match any listed but it's good to get informed.

Nearly 3 million RV door locks recalled

August 8, 2013 by chuck | Filed under Misc..

Door lock model 43610

(August 8, 2013) — Fastec Industrial Corp. (FIC) is recalling certain model 43610, 40610, and 44610 door locks manufactured between January 2006 and April 2013 with a keyed paddle handle and deadbolt for use in recreational vehicles. More than 2.8 million RVs are affected by the recall.
It may be possible to remove the key from the lock in a way that potentially jams the deadbolt in locks with certain key codes. If the deadbolt jams, the interior side of the door lock may also jam. A person inside the recreational vehicle at the time will then be locked in and be unable to exit the vehicle without using the emergency exit, increasing the risk of injury.
FIC will notify the original equipment door and RV manufacturers and the consumers of record and instruct them on how to determine whether they have a defective lock. Consumers of record will be sent replacement cylinders with instructions, free of charge. The vehicle manufacturers will notify their consumers. The recall is expected to begin September 10, 2013. Owners may contact FIC at 1-800-837-2505.
Owners also may contact Fastec at 1-800-837-2505 or the NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).

This also applies to the recall: Check the operation of the deadbolt with you door open !
Second, the recall includes
any deadbolt lock with one of the WESCO part numbers,

regardless
of the key code, where the key can be removed from the deadbolt cylinder when the
key is in the 9 o’clock position and the deadbolt is engaged. Under normal use and operation,
the keys to the lock should only be able to be removed in the 12 o’clock (neutral) and 3 o’clock

(unlocked) positions.

Just spoke to Whitney at Fastec. Replacement cylinders and installation toolkit are enroute, with instructions. Sounds pretty simple. They'll provide a postage-paid envelope and they ask that we return the old cylinder and the installation toolkit.

That helps lots! I had duplicates made for my keys (as they tend to walk away) and if those are all the numbers, then I Escaped!

Thank you for this...we just became Escape owners this spring and stumbled upon this site...how wonderful that this was posted: ours is among those recalled, and they're sending us a replacement kit. She did say there would be a pre-paid envelope provided for us to send back the recalled key).
Thank you!!!!

I've tried to contact FastTec twice now and got a recording on their main phone number to leave a message (which I've done). Anyone know how to get ahold of a, "real person" there? Thanks in advance!

Installed the replacement cylinders yesterday. About a fifteen minute job including time to go get and open a beer.

Murphy's law is receiving the replacement parts, going to pick up the trailer from its "Secure" storage and head out for the week only to find someone had tried to break in and managed to break the interior of the door handle. The dead bolt held but we now need a complete lock mechanism! fortunately Escape has them in stock. Cheers
