Mosquitos
So wondering how bad the mosquito situation is while out camping? My experience is shady areas are the most problematic.

It depends a lot on where (and who) you are. I camped the last ten days (well, two were in the city) in Washington and BC and encountered only a few, but I don't normally get bitten, and it wasn't swampy where I was (though all of it was near water). Someone else might have seen a lot more. Plus that was the first stretch of warmer weather so now they'll start multiplying faster. Probably a good idea to have something along just in case.

Hi: Lynn L... Lots of standing water here in South Wet Ontario so I'm thinking its going to be a bumper crop of B52 sized mosquito's. They love me but the feeling isn't mutual!!! Alf

Yes, and mozzies are bad this year with very wet spring in BC. Last weekend at the Escape Rally, we were well bitten.

We always have some kind of screened enclosure for when they are swarming.
The optional Escape screen room goes on our 2014 awning in a couple minutes and our Clam screen room can cover the picnic table as fast.
I treat the screen surfaces with permethrin spray which seems to make insects leave the area (to the neighbor's campsite ).

Which proves my point- same rally, different campsite, different person, no bites! (I did see a couple of mosquitos, though, I think because someone was overwatering the lawn near me.)

We were in site not 50 feet from Chris and Patricia. No bites. Maybe it was the dust cloud that surrounded us.

I find the best repellant is another person nearby that the mosquitos prefer to me.

Depends on the surroundings.
Recent rain in the ADK's ...the noseeums are hot! Nothing like snorting one while just trying to breath. Don't disturb the ground....
I'd take a cluster of mosquitos to one pesky noseeum! I always seem to slap my own ear...when the mosquito does a fly by.

Maybe we hadn't consumed enough Scotch and other whiskies at Jim Bennett's?

On our cross-Canada trip this year it's been about 80% none, 15% a few to swat and 5% that made us glad that we brought our Lee Valley hats with a built-in mosquito net.

Mosquitos
Be sure not to swat the male mosquitos. They don't bite. Only the females do.

Mosquitos at Cultis Lake very few and not aggressive. I think
I killed one in two nights. If they are bad I like the thermacell. We've had them for 7 years and while the refills are a little pricy for some tastes, when I have something that works well cost becomes secondary. Never got a bite in C-1 at Osoyoos. When I worked in Idaho the noseeums were bad. We even ran some grades on noseeum creek. Needless to say, not a good week.
