You're right. If I was a religious person, I would have been saying my "Hail Mary's" in thanks for missing that one.

Glad to hear you respected mother nature and avoided her wrath. Just curious, did you have to tow your 19 in 4WD at all?

I would not like a Narrow Escape; 6'8" is as narrow as I'd want to go.

I did flip the transmission into 4H for a short stretch when things were starting to look a bit scary, but several vehicles travelling in front of me pretty much cleared wheel tracks down to the pavement, so the 4x4 was not really necessary.

As I was waiting in line for about 40min for traffic to begin moving again, I was pondering a scenario where I may have had to turn the truck and trailer around on the road and go back the way we came, and was thinking that 4wd would likely be helpful if that became necessary. But eventually, traffic began to move again and all was well.

Hi Dave, So I tow my 19 with a 2007 FJ and live in the Sierras in Northern California so I was curious if it's safe to tow the 19 in 4WD in snowy conditions, also do you use chains on the 19 in those conditions? Jim

Dave, very wise move to pull over and wait it out. I’m glad everything turned out ok.

I don't tow my Escape trailer during the winter, as our northern Alberta winters are typically too cold for me to enjoy camping at that time of year. I have towed smaller utility trailers with the FJ in the winter and have used 4WD at times for that. I have never used chains on my tow vehicle or on any of my trailers.

My experience is not a lot different.

I tow a cargo trailer, and sometimes a dump trailer, all the time in the winter. I too have never used chains, but have used 4WD a lot of the time in more slippery conditions. I do give a bit more room from vehicles in front of me, but driving with care, it is not much of a problem at all. I have towed my 5.0TA twice now through the mountains in January with no issue. I do have a set of chains for the truck, but have never used them, you would need deep snow or super slippery conditions to warrant their use.

I wouldn't think you would need chains on non-drive wheels but I'm from California . . . what do I know?

They could help you stop as that is probably more important in slippery weather.

As I said, what do I know?

This is kind of interesting in a pinch:

In the Sierras, I have always used chains when I've towed in snowy conditions. The snow has a higher moisture content than the drier, fluffier stuff you get, for instance, in Alberta. I have gotten away with no chains in eastern Washington (not towing, though). Again, where you have mountains catching the initial blast of storms off of the Pacific Ocean, the moisture content makes for heavier, slushier snow--nasty!

Moist snow and snow in warmer conditions definitely make it slicker. I used to marvel at schools in the east shutting down with minimal snow, but I now understand it is that the roads become very icy. We get that too, but not too often.
