Narrow Escape from Severe Hail Storm

Our family was headed home yesterday from a vacation in Sand Point Idaho, My wife, daughter and I with our 19' and my son and his girlfriend with the 15B. We were back in Alberta heading towards Longview from Pincher Creek when we encountered some really ominous clouds. They were so scary that we ended up pulling over into a rest area about 2 km before we would have encountered the weather and decided to wait it out. Turns out that was a very smart decision. When we continued on our way in about 45 min, it was only a couple km before we encountered heavy accumulations of hail on the roads and surrounding areas, up to about a foot thick in places. The road was closed for a bit until it became passable again and we continued on our way.

Wow! And I betcha it was hot in Sandpoint. It was when I was there a few weeks ago. What a shocker of a change in weather.

Glad everyone is okay and all that. Dang!

(As well as the lovely FJ)

I’ve only seen hail thick enough to plow with a snow plow once in Iowa and it was not nearly that deep. Your stopping to let the storm pass was a prudent decision and a lot of others could learn from your example.
Safe travels in the future

Did you stop in Longview at the Little New York Bistro? The best food ever!

Yes you never know what to expect with Alberta weather.

The hailstorm kind of took the wind out of our sails. We had been planning on spending one last night at Chain Lakes before heading home but we decided to push on and head straight for home.

Thanks Dave. I am usually the one who wants to push on but for some reason was quite happy to pull over and sit in my Escape while watching the cows run for cover. That was actually quite entertaining to see!

I know ominous all too well …. its when my alarm goes off and I have to get up and go to work …. Ominous indeed!

Glad you are all safe. Were any of the hail stones large enough to do damage?

Tom
