Question Need a 10' x 30' shade sail.

Hi all

To shade our Escape we need a 10' x 30' shade sail.

Would strongly prefer one piece. Not multiple.

Due to space limitations we can not put up a structure or car port.

No we do not want a cover.

Anyone in the USA have suggestions for a shade sail? 10 x 30'

Walmart sells one but I am not convinced of the quality or the looks.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mighty-Pr...Green/50547619

Thanks.

John

I went to a agriculture site and purchased some sun fabric that is used to shade plants, worked out well. This was maybe 4 years ago.

Due to property line setback restrictions, I wasn't able to build a shelter as desired, so the shade sail was a good solution. It's easy to put up/take down and keeps the leaves and sun off the trailer. We purchased the sail from MightyCovers.com and it has performed very well so far. We plan on housing our Escape underneath. The images were before the project was finished.

I assume you take it down in case of snow?

You are correct. It does need to be taken down for snow. Fortunately (or unfortunately), we don't get much in Durham, but I did have to take it down for a snow a few weeks ago. It took about 5 mins to unhook from two of the four sides and let it hang. Re-hooking it took about 10 mins. This wouldn't be a good winter solution for those living in snowy areas.

Snow? What's that?

Just kidding. I'm in Anchorage and I definitely found the snow.

But I was thinking, 8 months of the year it would protect from leaves and sun, neither of which one has much of Dec-Mar......I may look into another set up, I let the one I had go to a neighbor with an arbor, but it is relatively inexpensive and temporary, so no permits.

It will do great in that scenario. It's amazing how much stuff falls from the trees. Along with UV protection, it also keeps the trailer cooler during the warmer months because it's not in direct sun.

Thanks Jim and Charlie for the info and link to growerssupply.com ..... very helpful.

I made some calls, and got rough price quotes from two possible sources of a 10’ x 30’ shade cloth, with re-inforced edges.

the first option is

MighyCovers.com

Shade Sails and Sun Shades - Perfect for Covering Patios

A shade cloth would be an actual rectangle, with straight edges. (not curved edges like a shade sail)

The best possible mesh fabric is their COMMERCIAL 95 - the best mesh they sell. 15 colors.

Due to the situation (a relatively flat installation of the fabric) Sunbrella is not suitable, as water could pool in it in the rain. The mesh allows water to drain thru it.

with grommets down 2 sides, and with all sides re-inforced the cost would be about $750.
Blocks about 95% of UV.

Lifespan would likely be about 10 years. This is a premium mesh.

I’ll have to see the color swatches when they arrive. In the mail to me today.

or

The * cheaper * option (that only comes in very dark green, and has a life expectancy of about 5 years) is a custom made shade cloth from Growers Supply.

https://www.growerssupply.com/farm/s...RNAL_PAGE_3001

Similar specifications with grommets, and re informed edges is $250 (but with about 1/2 the life span)
Blocks about 90% of UV.

and

The great news is that Growers Supply sells a full range of stainless steel cable, turnbuckles, etc, so I’ll very likely buy the hardware from them, regardless. They have what strikes me as good prices on 3/16th stainless cable. $0.31 feet so the 55 feet we’d need is only about $17.

My plan is to support one side of the sun shade cloth by simply threading the 3/16ths stainless cable (that supports one side thru the shade sail. Both manufacturers indicated that this should work fine.
I’d use turnbuckles to somewhat tension the cable.
